*assume you get 3 picks each*

In 1v1, picks go ABBAAB
In 2v2, picks go ABbaabBAABba

Correct so far, yes?

In 3v3, what happens?

I only ask because I have a game which has just moved to turn one. Let's say my team are ABC, and the opponents XYZ. A, B AND C all failed to get their #1 pick, so effectively our opponents must have got first picks! On this evidence, picks go XYZABCCBAZYXXYZABC, which seems crazy! Surely it would be far better to intermingle picks?

Out of curiosity, Dom, is it this game you're talking about?

(If it's that game then I'm confused)

if all three of you guys had different picks then this is impossible, but if 2 or 3 of you had the same first pick then it is just unlucky..

That's what I would have imagined, but I didn't think it's the case. See my comment below, though!

Eririn - maybe :p

Wrong - all three of us had different picks, and it happened...

I think I've worked it out though..
A & X put territory i as their #1 and j as their #2
B & Y put k as their #1 and l as their #2
C & Z put m & n.

So, A gets first pick, and gets i. X gets second pick, and can't get i, so gets j instead. Then B gets his pick, which is k, and when Y picks next, they can't get k, so get l. Similarly, C gets M and Z gets N.

That, surely, has to be what happened! IMO, this is silly - picks should alternate by team - it should be AXYBCZ, or a variant thereof.

Anyway remember that can happen in 3v3, one team get ALL their 1st pick: ABCXYZZYXCBA.
And are completely random, not alternate by team.

Are you sure Gnuff?

So far as I know, if we have 2 teams, ABC and XYZ the first pick round can be:
AXBYCZ but not ABCXYZ.

In the second round the teams are inverted, but the team itself gets randomized again… something like AXBYCZ -> XAZCYB can happened, but not AXBYCZ -> CZAXBY.

What can happens is something like: A picks Alpha, B picks Beta, C picks Gamma and in the other team X picks Alpha, Y picks Beta, Z picks Gamma. And then the picking gets like XAYBZC so, X gets Alpha and A gets his second pick, Y gets Beta and B gets his second pick, and Z gets Gamma and C gets his second pick. But never XYZABC.

What's notable is that random move order is different from cyclic move order.

In cyclic, AXBYCZ (or variants) is the pick order, which means that team ABC can take all first picks.
In random, AXYBCZ (or variants) is the pick order, which means that team ABC can't take all first picks.

(Well, this is what it's supposed to do, anyway.)
