I am no native american, but I would think Indians is not as big of a deal as Redskins is (an actual racial slur). I know my school (Central Michigan) got permission from the Chippewa Indians tribe to keep using their name. But they have the flying "C" shown in my avatar, they don't use a picture of an Indian, and they don't have an Indian mascot like Florida State and some other schools.

Well first Chris, you maybe should have read the posts in the thread :P

But of a serious note, pretty much every professional team that has names referencing Native Americans has had some sort of ceremonious blessing from the local natives that they're referencing. From what I know (I'm native, but only slightly), most Native Americans aren't offended in the least bit. If you wanted to change the names of these teams, would you also change the "Fighting Irish" which has a mascot of a drunken leprechaun? Being respectful is one thing, but getting upset about something that's not even supposed to be offensive in the first place is a waste of time and air.

EagleBlast,
NCAA actually now requires tribal approval before such names can be used. Florida got approval from the Seminole tribe while North Dakota failed to get approval from one Sioux tribe and as such have to change their name.

Eastern Michigan changed from Hurons to Eagles also a while ago.

And no, I did not read those links.

I thought we were moving back to American Indians since a lot of tribes prefer that over native americans...

I myself dislike the term "Indian" because it's inaccurate, but if someone says it, I won't be offended, it's just that the word is stupid because Indians are from India and people should have started using the updated terms along time ago. But alot of the older Native-Americans call themselves "Indian" because it's what they've been so used to, so yeah :L
