I might owe you an apology. I wanted to test a real-time matchmaking system (i.e., a setup that finds out players who are online and randomly pairs them up in games so they don't have to actively look for players- a feature I'm planning on implementing at least for Optimum) and I didn't know where to go, so I used you. Without asking. :/ Sorry.

Especially for the bugs. It's getting a bit spammy (just realized that my system flagged some players as "online" who hadn't been online for a whole 25 hours) as well but I honestly don't know what to do about it.

Sorry for making you my guinea pigs.

a good idea, although i know of several people like myself who stay logged in 24 / 7 and just come here when time allows. I think there would be lots of people declining.

Interestingly enough, just being logged in doesn't flag you as "online"- my own profile says I was last online over 80 minutes ago even though I'm still online (and actively commenting on forums). I think it might be based on your last turn in a game.

being online on the dashboard doesn't flag you as online if i'm not mistaken, entering games does (dunno what exactly does and does not flag as online though)

I initially thought it would be anything that called to WL's servers, but clearly forums aren't included so that can't be the case.

So far, any move I've made in a game has counted.

Oh yeah, I'm not just going to randomly add people in the future. Not sure how the opt-in feature would be set up (probably just bringing in anyone in Optimum and any other clan that decides to join the system as a group) but there will be one. >_<

Maybe we could keep it really simple, and make it a clan opt-in system, the leader or whoever opts the whole clan in, then members can decline if not interested, something like that? Just a thought...

I know that's not ideal in the long run but could be an easy way to get things going?

As far as I can tell everyone seems to be declining games with me so far :(

I guess they're just too scared to play me ;)

Most of those were probably clean-up deletions by me (I've been running many iterations of the test system). The main issue is that no one's ever notified when they get invited to one of these- they could just be playing a 1v1 auto and never notice.

Missing Order Priority/Order Delay card and/or lack of attack by percentage? If that's the case, those are the changes I mentioned in the description- I'm going to make those specific ones clearer in future iterations.

I had to make them or a lot of players wouldn't have been able to participate due to the API restrictions.

Right now, I don't really have mechanisms to distinguish between "I don't like this opponent," "I don't have time right now," and "Fuck you this is a dumb idea I'm out" since it's all just based on the Decline button (which removes you from the player pool) and whether you're online (which adds you to a smaller pool unless you're already in a game- which then tries to add you to a game).

Basically, you've left the player pool for the current iteration- which is only going to be running for the next 12-14 hours or so (since I still have not put this up on a server and it's just running locally for ease of modification/debugging). Once that iteration ends, if you're online and the system's running on your clan again, you'll be forcibly rejoined and will get the opportunity to join/decline again.

Right now, the system just tracks players, finds who's online, and gives them a reliable supply of completely randomly matched (within the online pool) games. The result of a game isn't taken into account at all- that's a next-stage feature (which would basically create an implicit real-time ladder with simplified UX).

It'd be cool if you could do something like this for diplo clans. You use this exact idea on a larger scale (More people in a game with randomized map for diplomacy with custom scenario).

This is also a great way for diplo games to not have trolls, afkers, PE's (People that mess up diplo games) Aren't you able to pull people out of the 'experiment'?

So you will get active diplo players that play properly.

Im down for that ;)

Just an idea, but I know i would love this.

Yep, that's definitely on the roadmap. I feel like finding diplo players (especially reliable ones) is harder- and if we could get rid of the 2-3h long wait for real-time diplos, that would be perfect.

The only challenge is that this would only work with single-start templates because there's no way to programmatically add/remove players from games (using just the API) so if you have someone in slot A and they decline, you can't simply replace them.

Not necessarily. There's some pretty good single-start templates out there (like Kingdoms & Castles on Apollo's British Isles map)- I personally think they make for better diplos and are less likely to result in imbalanced boot-to-win games. We'll just have to gather such templates and then I can get that running too.

The system is going to have to be opt-in, though, because Declines/disappearances are going to be very, very hard to manage once a player's already added to the game.

We might just have to wait for Optimum's PhantomWL project to finish so we have a more fully-featured API to work with.

True.. That's one of my favorite diplo game/map.

Slots help a lot, saves a lot of time. starting from one place and trying to complete a country feels a lot different to having it as you start. Maybe its just me...

I can handle single-start though. Not a massive issue.

This would just be harder to work with since (without manual supervision/correction) a game would have to be remade with a new roster every time someone disappears. Still going to decrease wait time though.

I dont know how difficult this would be to make but what about before the game you are given, information, you are sent a mail or something saying a diplomacy game will be held at this time at this date. You can then opt in or out. If you say no you are replaced until you find someone who can.

or

You make use of the auto- game if online function, you are invited to a game just before the game starts and if you decline that game you wont be invited to the actual game but if you accept it you are invited.

Don't think its possible to do these one but just putting it out there.

There's two streams running- a large one and a small one (for elite clans), with the large one having a ~5-6min (up to 10) wait and the small one updating each minute at the most. I forgot to put Blitz in this time. :/ I could start a third stream with Blitz and a few other clans if you'd like- one with 2-3min updates.
