Probably because you got into his antarctica bonus and greenland and saw that it would just be a downfall from there since he only had one more bonus( Indonesia was basically screwed)

His start positions were amaghzing

He was not active in three of his starting positions, the fourth was next to you. Almost all his bonuses were hard to take and that is how you got the advantage.
