Oh and, Japan attacked the US primarily because the US was maneuvering against imperial Japan diplomatically and economically, by choking off the supply of oil from Indonesia and the Phillipines, vital to the continued momentum of the Japanese war machine in Korea and China. Most evidence points to it being an unintentional communications error that caused the Pearl Harbor attack to occur before official receipt of Japan's declaration of war. No, I don't in any way think that Imperial Japan's goals were admirable, but to say that they attacked us without some compelling strategic cause is patently false. If not for the fact that the world hadn't yet realized that air power would obsolete battleships, they well might have won with their opening gambit, but as it was it forced a strategic shift in American naval operations that proved to be the trump card in the Pacific game.

There were many many battles during the cold war, they were just proxy battles, such as various revolutions in Central America and Africa where the USSR would support one side and the US the other, or those little spats known as the Korean and Vietnam wars. The stakes were too high for the US and Russia to go to war with each other directly, and it was the 3rd world that paid the price by and large.

Read up on Haille Sellassie and the rise of the concept of "Collective Security" for some excellent insight into why it might indeed be a good idea to stick your nose in another continent's business. Generally though, major powers ALWAYS get involved in wars through their own devices. I think the last war that the US really had to get dragged into was WWI, mostly because of a strong isolationist streak amongst the citizens that only changed upon the sinking of the Lusitania.

why skip solar now and wait to run out of more non renewable resources? I only wish i wasnt too cheap to dish out the crazy amounts they want for solar now. I hate giving big companies my money when there is another option out there. In germany they are doing great things now with solar, even working a retirement income plan from selling it back to the power company after the initial investment is paid off.If everyone were on board with this there would be no need to bomb libya now.

I wasn't claiming any proof at all about the sinking of the Lusitania, though my personal feeling is that Occam's Razor totally shreds most conspiracy theories about both that and 9/11, and Pearl Harbor come to mention it. Nevertheless, the fact is clear that the sinking of the Lusitania, however it came to pass, was the critical event in swaying American public opinion in favor of entering WWI.

Actually America entered the First WOrld War in April, 1917, whereas the Lusitnia was sunk in May, 1915. They entered the war, ironically enough, because another Great Power was putting their nose in another continent's business. The Germans were trying to treat with the Mexicans and getting them to invade the US. At the same time, the restarting of unrestricted submarine warfare in February 1917 all but assured the fact that President Wilson would enter the war. The German government, mainly the military , believed that they could end the war and starve Britain before American forces could reach the continent in force. The American entry into the war is directly the fault of the German government. Wilson did not necessarily wish to fight the war, but only mediate it. He was forced to join with Britain and France when it was clear the American economic trade would be threatened.

Additionally, Lusitania was sunk by Germans. Don't be stupid - The German government admitted it at the time. They explained the the Lusitania was carrying ammunition, thus justifying their fire.
