There's 0 places to look for strategies because there are so many maps and different settings
How the heck do you get good at this game to the point you can win tournaments? O_O

I was good as now as i started the game. There are some basic skills you get by doing things, solve puzzles or by understanding math rules.

To win a tournament getting higher a ladder means absolutly nothing. Because of luck and manipulation.

Its like you would play a huge FFA and many players work covered together.

You could give me a (some) replay(s), then i can give you advice, if you really do anything wrong.

I like that part about the tournaments and ladders. So ridiculous.

My advice: play with as good players as possible, play the ladders and ask whenever possible what you did wrong. Watch and play WGL. Think about picks, their mechanics, not only "i want that bonus and counter the other bonus, picks done".

You'll naturally get better as you play the game longer.

There are some good guides online that you can read.
They should cover basic ideas that can be applied to most maps and settings.

Till now i havent checked out the warlight ladder, because the game settings are crap. But i have only seen manipulated ladders and pro scenes till now, why warlight should be a exception?

Asking good players to play against me

Getting stomped by players that play better than you and asking them to point out your mistakes is a great way to improve

The will to look for my mistakes and try to better moves

Learning to blame losses on yourself and not on luck or whatever else goes a long way! Also 99% of the times you win, you'll be able to find something you could have done better

Not giving a fuck about winrates

1. They don't mean a thing
2. Once you get better they'll just grow naturally. You can hide them on your profile if you feel they are too low and don't want to show them

Good luck, hope that helps!

One of the best ways for me to learn a template is to play it on the seasonal ladder. Since I only have 20 games, I usually focus a lot better and spend more time thinking about each move (and plan a turn or few in advance). I work way harder at those games, and by the time the season is done I'm generally a much better player and able to play the template well at a much faster speed. My first season helped me on other templates as well.

Other things that helped me:
1. Watching top match-ups on the ladders
2. Reviewing my games for mistakes and good moves
3. Having someone take the time to give some advice
4. Understanding that in cycle move order, you have to figure out the order, it doesn't just tell you like in no-luck cycle
5. Listing all of the possible pick combinations you can get and taking the pick order into account when picking (123, 124, 125, 126, 134, 135, 136, 145, 234, 235, 236)
6. Counting/calculating
7. Playing quick games on the template I want to learn and trying several different strategies to see what works

Sephiroth has some good advise.

I suggest: review the games of good players (available on the ladder), thinking about what you'd do at each move, and trying to figure out why they did what they did. Play against good players, either in a clan, on a ladder, or tournaments. Don't waste your time on open games, except occasionally; you'll usually get matched against very bad players, and playing them won't help you improve.

Most of all, invest some time and thought into your games, both during the game, and after the game when you get a chance to review it. If you just play thoughtlessly, and never try to figure out what happened, you won't improve.

Edit: an alternate path to becoming a great player, is to convince yourself that you're already a great player. Other people may harbor doubts about your ability, and you may have to avoid ladders and tournaments; however, you'll get the satisfaction of feeling like a great player without having to think very hard.

Pick decent spots, expand decently, make decent delays before attacking and then attack right decently.

And then you win.

It looks like this thread is just for fun. Whatever, if you have really problems with your skills, you cant do anything to improve them. I have never see a bad player become better, whatever happened.

By the way it doesnt matter anyway. You will never get a fair play especially in ladders.

@MRSKILL I'm unsure if you're a troll or just kind of dim. But you're pretty new, I have seen many bad players become better, that includes myself (I like to think I am decent now).

And the ladders are not perfect to judge people, since people cheat from time to time. But I would still say they're pretty reliable to judge if someone is a better player than someone else who is rated much lower.

Edit: Clicked your profile, you've played much more than me. I'm assuming you're joking.

I'm not that good at RT ladder, but for learning the templates, I suggest playing RT ladder. Sure, you'll lose some games, but this is the quickest way to learn.

Edit: nice win rate

it is true, that there are many varieties of game settings and maps, but don't let that overwhelm you. the vast majority you will see, follow similar rules in determining the winner.

if you want to practice rt ladder, you could always make games that copy the template, with others, multiday if you have to :P

rt ladder does not really let you focus on a specific template at a time, but at least you get matched up quicker now.

improving, here or anywhere, is all about mindset, ability is more about how fast/how much you improve, not whether you improve.

you can learn from your wins and your losses, if you have some understanding of strategy, picking, and such. if you won, why? what mistakes did your opponent make? did you allow your opponent a chance to make a comeback?

if you lost, in the most simplistic of analysis, find the turning points in the game.

self-analysis is as important as watching good players, since everyone has their quirks in their playstyle.

No time to get links, but someone linked Odin's guide, which is very good. M'Hunters also has a good guide, that is floating around somewhere. :))

p.s. try to find players about your skill level, or just a little higher up. The closer the game, the more you have to think about it, while having a realistic chance of winning. (This is for practicing what you learn. fighting a strong player is for learning, as any mistakes on your part will far more likely be punished)

1) learn to read settings before joining game, they greatly affect how you should pick and expand optimally.

2) check games played on different settings (ladder games are good start, random tournament finals are also usually decent), go through history of the game and figure out when the game turned into someone's favor.

3) play more against skilled players (realtime ladder is good place to start), beating casual open games players is very easy compared to ladder or tournament matches.

4) analyse your games after you are done (check why you lost and what you could have done better, why didn't you think of that at the time?)

5) ask skilled players where you lost, if you ask they will often give some comment on where they thing the game turned

6) WGL is a nice place to test your skills with realtime games and commentary from skilled players, and we usually answer questions posted on the chat. so join us every saturday.
