While I like both, I generally prefer Wells. The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds in particular are really well done. The ending to War of the Worlds is just perfect (no spoilers here through), and The Invisible Man beautifully explores the consequences of being invisible.

Verne's books tend to be more like adventure books, whereas Wells tends to explore the implications of a particular technology or event, which I personally find more engaging. In some ways I find Verne more similar to Edgar Rice Burroughs who wrote the Princess of Mars series, Pellucidar, and of course Tarzan, though Burroughs's stories are more clearly adventure stories.

Jules Verne was an influence for H.G. Wells. I have read quite a few books from both of them, however I can not really pick a favorite.

Well, I grew up reading war of the worlds and other books by wells however I have recently begun to read more by Verne so I have an equal liking for both of them

Jules Verne. H.G. Wells doesn't mention turnips at all, but Verne does in 80 Days Around The World and in The Mysterious Island.
