Concerning absurdly long boot times & players deliberately holding up games: 4/13/2011 09:29:33

I'd like to see some sort of mechanism implemented to prevent people from deliberately holding up games.
As it is now, unreasonably high boot times can be abused.

Suggestion:
If a player does not make his move in a game for whatever reasons he might have that is fine with me, he can take as much time as he needs, even if the boot time is 99 days, since all players agreed to that.
BUT:
He (or she) shouldn't be allowed to submit turns in any other of his games either! As soon as he does, the boot times on all other games he is holding up should default to something reasonable, say a week max, because obviously the player everyone was waiting for to submit his turn has now returned (from his honeymoon? :-) and has proven by submitting a turn that he has a chance to play?
I can understand it when people log in only to see if there are new turns available, I often do so myself when I'm on the train, but I rarely play on my cellphone because its a PITA, so the boot times on the games held up should not be shortened if the player merely logs in to warlight.net, but only if really a turn is submitted in any of his games.
I cannot understand people who are aware that they hold up a game, yet still don't play.
So please make boot times default to a reasonable limit, once an absent player has returned and made his move in any of his games.

Some games require more time to reflect and think of strategy. Makes sense you would play in some and not others. If you don't like it use the 'nudge' or don't join games with the people who do this. It is an easy solution that requires a minimal effort on your part. There doesn't need to be a complicated technological fix which would cause more frustration than it would solve.

As annoying as this can be, I think it's easy enough to just avoid games with extremely long boot times. I agree with NoZone that no real fix is really needed.

*Some games require more time to reflect and think of strategy.*

Some games maybe, but certainly not in Turn 0? And certainly not for 99 days?

*Makes sense you would play in some and not others.*

Ok, for the more complex games that might be true.

*If you don't like it use the 'nudge'*

Already did that. No response.

*or don't join games with the people who do this. It is an easy solution that requires a minimal effort on your part.*

That is true, I should have read the game settings more carefully. However, after playing half a dozen games with the same host, all of them with standard boot settings, I had no reason to be suspicious and scrutinize the settings yet again, thought it was simply an invite for a rematch. My bad.

*There doesn't need to be a complicated technological fix which would cause more frustration than it would solve.*

Ok, if that is what all of you think then I'll just have to wait a few more days, 95 to be precise ... but still a bit annoying.
Highlighting non standard game settings in bright red colour would really help a lot...

I knew a player who used to 'punish' people by taking the maximum amount of time when things weren't going their way. It would be nice if there were a way to counter that but now I just go out of my way to avoid that player. It's easy enough.

You might try your suggestion on uservoice.

the special boot settings were designed to counter these instances.. if people are given extra time only rarely, then they would have less ability to drag out games..

the problem with this solution is.. whats a reasonable amount of time?
some people only play weekly, and only play in games that are absurdly long boot time due to that fact.. if say Player A is playing in 2 30 day auto-boot games, and can only log in twice a month *well within both games limits* and comes into one game, makes his turn, should his auto-boot for the second game be limited to 7 days, and thus immediately booted?
should we allow a griefer to boot him in that time, possibly having known the estimated time he takes his turns?
griefers will grief.
and personally, many manual boot games, turn 0 is where I put much more thought into the game then into any of the other turns, *except in special occassions* having said that without looking at your link.

Personally, I see it as an issue, albiet a minor one, and cannot myself foresee a solution that would not cause either as many or more issues, primarily caused by the same sort of people the majority of the community will likely avoid anyways..

Diabolicus, Highlighting non-standard settings would probably be the simplest solution that everyone could agree on.

I don't think preventing a player from moving in some games until they move in others is going to work, because of situations such as team games where you are waiting for a teammate to acknowledge something you said or change their move and you aren't submitting yours until it happens.

I think highlighting non standard options is a good idea as well, and the best solution to avoiding troublesome games.
