America: Should it be legal?: 2/10/2016 22:07:38

Tyrion I deleted my post, I admit I was wrong. Ditto for General Pe's post, today is not my day. Errare humanum est.

About CATA, he meant the American continent as a whole, since some consider North and South America as a single mass of land and hence as one continent. So his point is valid.

Again, wrong.

Whenever someone refers to North and South America as one land mass, it is called, "the Americas."

Cata, your being ridiculous.

Thanks.
Only Europeans claim that United States of America can't be called "America."

You better do your research where the name "America" comes from, before we argue more.
No one refers to the US as "the Americas"

See OT-post.
No one calls South America "America"

I do.
No one calls North America "America"

I do.
The only time "America" is used it is used to refer to the US.

Thats simply wrong.
When you refer to the two continents in the Western Hemisphere, you say "The Americas"

No, for explanation look above.

Actually it's even the contrary, Only "Americans" claim that UNited States of America is called "America". In French we call you specifically Etats-Uniens or Ricains, it is more relevant, in Spanish they also call you Estados-Unidenses.

And this is not only Europeans, the Chinese call your nation "Meiguo" whereas the continent is "Meizhou", you see they are differentiated. You are the only ones considering your nation incorporating the whole continent by "America" or "Americans".

btw, ironically in France, les Americains (the Americans) can also refer to the (only) French Canadians.

This term is highly polysemous. It depends on where you are from.

Okay.
The name "America" comes from Italian Discoverer Amerigo Vespucci. So the entire landmass from Alaska to Argentinia is called "America". Its true that you can divide it to North and Southamerica for easier orientation, but the continent as whole mass is still "America".
The USA (United States of America) are states that are united in America, that doesnt mean all states of America are united, therefor calling the USA as "America" is simpy WRONG, due to historical reasons.

The entire German Confederation is not within modern FRG so it's wrong to describe it as Germany.

English is currently the dominant language not due to the fact that it is an easy language, but because the US and the UK+its empire used this language and became dominant as an international language during the 20th century, it is just a question of power. Btw, Chinese impractical? I know its writing system seems rather hard, but speaking Chinese is actually way more logical compared to English. So this is highly debatable.

you know Jofferey, if you do not want to learn the Hanzi (Chinese characters) you can still use the Pinyin: Written Chinese with Latin Letters.
Actually, interesting anecdote: Mao and other communist leaders in the 50s were thinking about replacing the Chinese characters with the Latin script, because during this period few Chinese were literate, but they finally chose to keep the Chinese characters (that's part of their culture after all).

I don't have any interest in learning Chinese.

English language will be to the future what Greek was during the period of 300 BC - 100 AD (about)
