One question:

How is attack only and transfer only used strategically?

Strategically

Attack Only- only moving your troops if another territory is taken, otherwise keeping them at the original territory for defense (usually a later move)

Transfer Only- moving your forces to another territory if it's still yours, but otherwise staying put so you don't burn forces when your opponent has the defensive advantage (usually an earlier move)

Unstrategically

It has no strategic use. Don't let these elitist pricks fool you!

@knyte, there's a few more tricks you can do with attack only/transfer only

Attack only keeps you from moving a stack in the wrong direction unless necessary.

Transfer only keeps you from attacking a large stack of armies if your opponent takes the territory before you get the chance to transfer your armies to defend it.

@Guns: Yep, I was just giving some basic examples. But they're pretty versatile.

There's another really useful strategy with Transfer Only or Attack Only. If you plan to blockade a territory with X troops, you can hit with X-1 troops to either: A) A territory you are 100% sure you will own by the end of the turn using Attack Only, or B) A territory you are 100% sure your opponent will own at the end of the turn using Transfer Only. Then you can move remaining troops to a different territory. This may be tough to comprehend until you use it in your own game or until you see an example.

Turn 7 is where Timinator used this move. He originally Transfer Only'd 7 armies to Mexico, planning to move the rest to Colombia. If Piggy had not hit, Timinator would have 8 sitting in Panama, and 23 sitting in Colombia, and Panama would be blockaded. It may be tough to grasp this concept until you use it in your own gameplay, so I suggest experimenting with this and seeing how it works.

Basically using an empty move (i.e., one that never actually gets executed) to immobilize those X-1 armies and make sure that you won't accidentally reduce the number of armies at that territory below X + that you won't have X armies at that territory. You're basically exploiting the fact that your move exposes the actual # of armies at that territory (at that time during the turn) rather than relying on more common moves where you have to guess (or assume that you'll have just as many armies there in the middle of the turn as you do at the start).

It took a little thinking to grasp the concept, but I think I get the idea. you are basically trying to get an exact number of troops on a territory for your blockade. If you were to just transfer the troops you do not want to blockade with back, if you were hit before hand, you would very likely end up blockading one... which would turn into 4, defeating the purpose.
