Welcome to Turn 3 of The Impaller versus The World, a game that everyone gets to participate in! For more information about the game, view this blog post.

The winning item from last time was number 6. Place 2 in Arkhangelsk, 3 in Moscow and 3 in Panama. Transfer 1 from Argentina to Colombia. Attack Vorkuta with 4 from Arkangelsk. Attack Ufa with 4 from Moscow. Attack Mexico with 8 from Panama.

Here's how we started:

Here's the outcome:

  • The World: Deploy 2 to Arkhangelsk

  • The World: Deploy 3 to Moscow

  • The World: Deploy 3 to Panama

  • The Impaller: 1 army transferred to Baja from Mexico

  • The World: 1 army transferred to Colombia from Argentina

  • The World: 4 armies captured Vorkuta from Arkhangelsk. 2 attacking armies killed, 2 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 4 armies captured Ufa from Moscow. 1 attacking armies killed, 2 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 8 armies captured Mexico from Panama. 0 attacking armies killed, 1 defending armies killed.

  • The Impaller blockades Baja

Here are our options:

  1. Goal: Form a ball towards India while ensuring the capture of Brazil to see West Africa. Remove The Impaller from Central America.
-Deploy 3 to Colombia and 9 to Ufa. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 11. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Brazil with 4. Attack Cuba with 7.

  2. Goal: Move towards India while attempting to gain control of the South America bonus. Remove The Impaller from Central America.
-Deploy 2 to Ufa, 3 to Argentina and 7 to Colombia. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 4. Attack Bolivia with 3. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Venezuela with 4. Attack Cuba with 7. Attack Brazil with 4.

  3. Goal: Head towards India and move strongly towards West Africa. If Impaller is not immediately in West Africa, the armies in Brazil would be able to take Bolivia next turn with the armies that hopefully take Cuba taking Venezuela.
-Deploy 2 to Ufa and 10 to Colombia. Attack Brazil with 11. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 4. Attack Cuba with 7.

  4. Goal: Ensure the control of the South America bonus and head towards India with an attack of 3 from Ufa (80% chance). Remove The Impaller from Central America.
-Deploy 1 to Ufa, 4 to Argentina and 7 to Colombia. Attack Cuba with 7. Attack Bolivia with 4. Attack Venezuela with 4. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 3. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Brazil with 4.

  5. Goal: Head towards India and move strongly towards West Africa. If Impaller is not immediately in West Africa, the armies in Brazil would be able to take Bolivia next turn with the armies that hopefully take Cuba taking Venezuela. Rely on 80% chance to move towards India.
-Deploy 1 to Ufa and 11 to Colombia. Attack Brazil with 12. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 3. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Cuba with 7.

  6. Goal: Move strongly towards India while taking Brazil to border West Africa. Remove The Impaller from Central America.
-Deploy 3 to Colombia and 9 to Ufa. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 11. Attack Cuba with 7. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Brazil with 4.

  7. Goal: Move into Africa with the majority of our income to border a potential East Africa presence for Impaller while gaining an immediate border with West Africa and moving towards India. Remove The Impaller from Central America.
-Deploy 3 to Colombia, 2 to Ufa and 7 to Novolazerevskaya. Attack South Africa with 7. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 4. Attack Cuba with 7. Attack Brazil with 4.

  8. Goal: Move strongly into Africa while relying on an 80% chance to take Brazil and gain a border with West Africa.
-Deploy 2 to Colombia and 10 to Novolazerevskaya. Attack South Africa with 10. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Cuba with 7. Attack Brazil with 3.

  9. Goal: Ensure taking Brazil, South Africa and Eastern Kazakstan. Remove The Impaller from Central America.
-Deploy 5 to Novolazerevskaya, 2 to Ufa and 5 to Brazil. Attack Eastern Kazakstan with 4. Transfer to from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Cuba with 7. Attack Brazil with 6. Attack South Africa with 5.

If The World loses did we disprove democracy?

So yeah. I should now say "I told you not to attack Mexico".

That was the most likley response. T -- what are our cards now?

Matma -- why does that result indicate attacking Mex was the wrong move. I expected that response and still think it was exactly the right move. We will most likley eliminate Imp from CA this turn. He's used up his blockade and we have the option of grabbing SA without him blocking. Had we not gone into Mex, we couldn't eliminate Imp this turn from CA and had we invested in our bonus in SA we'd have to worry about Imp coming down from bolivia and busting it for two more turns.

Imp sacrificed 3 armies to make that blockade, we once again won two of our attacks with no losses (inlcuding the attack on Mex.

I don't see an option for how I'd play this turn. The closest is #4. I would skip the attack into East Kaz though:

  1. Goal: Ensure the control of the South America bonus and remove The Impaller from Central America.

-Deploy 1 to Mexico, 4 to Argentina and 7 to Colombia. Attack Cuba with 8. Attack Venezuela with 4. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Bolivia with 4. Attack Brazil with 4.

Imp has to recognize the danger of losing his presence in CA, I like an attack with 8 (killing 4.8), much better than an attack with 7 (killing 4.2). Especially if the spare army is only going to a 3x2 exploratory attack. If we can reduce Imp to no more than 2 in Columbia, then we shoudl get SA this turn. Since we most likely kill 5, he would need to add 7+ to Bolivia to block us and have a shot at taking Bolivia back. I doubt he'd do that. So he either puts 4 there and takes a chance at gettign to go first, or he doesn't defend it at all. Not sure which is better for him -- depends on where he stands with picking up bonuses.

We have a very good shot of getting the +4 bonus this turn. That's the best outcome we can get. With 16 armies we can blow through EA if he's there.

I don't get the rush to get to India. EC has a wasteland and Causacus has a 4 blocking our way. WA, Scan, Austalia and W US are all better next spots to expand into than rushing to India. There's also no way Imp can get Causacus without our having a chance to stop him since Iran has a wasteland. So we're tying up our armies and taking out a 2 and 4 neutral in order to have a chance at busting a +3 bonus (which is easily blocked in 3 turns too).

I think it would be much more efficient to eliminate Imp in CA, take SA, and then, depending on how those mvoes work out, start working on W US and EA.

In fact it would be better to move 2 from Ufa over to Moscow to use on Scan next turn.

So here's my ideal turn:

10.Goal: Ensure the control of the South America bonus. Remove The Impaller from Central America. Set-up expansion into East Africa and Scandanavia bonuses.

-Deploy 1 to Mexico, 4 to Argentina and 7 to Colombia. Attack Cuba with 8. Attack Venezuela with 4. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Transfer 2 from Ufa to Moscow. Attack Bolivia with 4. Attack Brazil with 4.

I like how contained Imp is in Asia. The only way he has to expand is W China and indo -- and then nothing. W China and Indo both take 4 turns from India. He'd be particularly vulnerable in WC so he's more likley to work on Indo. After he gets his other two bonuses of course.

The big question is whether he started in WA. If it's WA and he goes hard at Brazil we would have to try and retake it next turn. I think going harder at Brazil and passing on the SA bonus is not worth it because if we're wrong we sacrifice 4 armies for nothing.

This game is, by the way, great for inexperienced players to learn the tactics used in warlight. And is also entertaining to follow =P

Here's another alternative that would address Matma's concern that imp might be coming from Africa. We forego the SA bonus for one more turn.

11.Goal: Remove The Impaller from Central America. Block any attempt to take Brazil from West Africa. Set up taking South America and Scandanavia bonuses next turn.

-Deploy 1 to Mexico, 4 to Arkhangelsk and 7 to Colombia. Attack Cuba with 8. Transfer 1 from Vorkuta to Ufa. Attack Norway with 4. Transfer 2 from Ufa to Moscow. Attack Brazil with 8.

This has some advantages over #10. We have no fear of Imp blocking our attempt to get SA from Cuba or WA. We have mor than enough armies to take Scan and SA next turn. Presumably we'd need 6-7 for Scan and none for SA. So we'd have another 5-6, plus the card to bust West Africa, cut up through South Africa or start on Australia next turn. That's a lot of versatility. And we'd be able to go +7 the following turn, which kind of makes up for missing the +4 next turn.

The only downside is that we forego our shot at getting the +4 bonus this turn. #11 is the more conservative choice, which is usually the right one when you think you're playing with a lead.

Incidentally -- on this map Greenland and Australia offer the best return on investment -- 5 income for 6 territories, same as Causacus (and you can get them in 3 turns)

I think I may like 11 better than 10 too. I still think 10 would work, but Imp is smart enough to realize that we must have at least two spots in SA now (only way to have reached him in CA second turn) and decide that he better block us while he still can. Spreading our income into 3 4x2 attacks might let him back into the game if it went really badly.

Like you said, we have an advantage so far and I think 11 is more of a sure thing too so that's why I would lean towards 11. I've lost plenty of games by rushing after an early advantage.

It's possible he took Cali, but very very unlikely because there's no short term advantage to it and every army is precious in the first few moves when income can increase exponentially. If there were no blockade he might've gone to Cali to try and come back and bust CA. Plus we suspect he's in Indo or India, so he can come back to Cali through HA if wants to try for W US later in the game.
