See R -- being top 15 is pretty damn good. A lot of people are fighting to get abvove .500.

Come back to the ladder!

Hey, you have a couple wins. That's more than a lot of people people can say! (most of the really bad people end up leaving the ladder, so it's hard to tell how your rank against them). You're clearly not the worst.

The ladder is a harsh mistress! The best way to climb up is to study each loss, figure out why you lost, and try to brainstorm ways to try to avoid losing that way again.

I can post at least 6 instances where I clearly had the better start and because of pure hast I screwed myself. Like not attacking a territory when I should have because I forgot to put that in the order list.

Yes I'm a whiner. :(

Only 4 players by my count are really 'unranked'. In that all the other players marked as unranked have simply left the ladder. There are currently 68 players on the ladder, 64 of them are ranked. There are however 97 people that have joined the ladder. So that means 97-68= 29 have left the ladder. No idea how many of them achieved a rank before leaving (versus quitting with less than 10 completed games).

Being low ranked or losing on the ladder is nothing to be ashamed of or feel bad about. A lot of the ladder players are very experienced playing 1v1 games and know the ins and outs. As long as you bother to take the time to try to improve (aka, if you actually care about winning) then you will see improvements and move up it.

Im open to playing some games to help out(only ranked 30th though). These setting arnt for everyone either, but not impossible to improve on. I think Craftys post awhile back on starting positions could help a beginner out alot, with these settings a bad start is a sure loss.

I agree completely with Impaller here. Losing is nothing to be ashamed of on the ladder, especially if your goal is to improve and become a better player. Each loss, even for the best players, is a learning experience for what to do, what not to do and when to do. If you would like to improve I would suggest studying the tactics and strategies used by the top players to figure out why they do what they do.

Understanding why they choose territories why and how they attack/expand etc. will make you a much better player, as opposed to simply trying to mimic someone's actions in a game they won. Lastly, with the 3-month ladder decay system, your early learning losses won't affect you at all down the road when you have improved and learned from your early mistakes.

Many players, like Guy posted above are more than willing to play a game or two with you to try and give you some pointers and to help you improve. So, if you want to be competitive and improve, there are plenty opportunities to do so, even if you feel you aren't a good player yet.

Another thing I would suggest is following the thread on The Impaller versus The World to see how many top players think about situations.

Hope this helps.

The abandons have literally lost me several games.

I can't memorize the map on each matchup.

Sometimes I start off well but then I find everywhere I go there's a wasteland.

I wish the ladders didn't have so many, but yes, thank you for the info, I'll certainly work on that.

Here's a tip: If you go to the history, and go back all the way to the beginning of the game, you can see the locations of all the wastelands. Nobody can remember the location of the wastelands in all of their games. That's an easy way to check to see where they are at any stage of the game. Hope that helps.

One of the things you absolutely HAVE to do it look at the history, and often. Go back to the distribution turn and check all the bonuses for wastelands to help you expand, and also to know where your opponent will be expanding to.

Not to mention it allows you to track how many armies per turn your opponent has been playing over the past turns you've been next to him. You can then judge where he might be, where he could be expanding into and how fast, and how many armies you might have to deploy to a specific spot in order to block him or capture his territory. It's important to play smart by watching the history.

At the beginning of every turn, hit the Home key, see where the wastelands are, then hit the End key and you're back where you were.

Haha, don't worry maxi, I didn't know you could do that for the longest time either. Eventually resorted to writing down all of the territories with wastelands before games :P
