The Martian Rants: BS Age Restrictions in the US.: 3/23/2016 00:26:14

In America:

I can sign my soul away to the military, vote for my next "president," and start smoking cancer at 18, but I can't take a swig of lager until 21. Mate that's bullshit. They expect me to vote while sober!? Why are cigars and cigarettes even legal? I get that they have been integrated into culture for hundreds of years now, but they are literal cancer! I can't drink a glass of healthy wine until 21 but I can start effectively killing myself at 18? Who's the brainiac who made this shit up? Some people may say, "Oh, but drunk people kill." 1) In moderation, alcohol is not life threatening nor debilitating. 2) Public drunkenness is handled harshly over in Europe where the drinking age is less than ours in some places, and there are not many problems to be had (aside from Septemberfest). Maybe Europe is doing something right for a change and we should take some notes. 3) I can feel the hours and days of life leaving my lungs when I breathe in secondhand smoke. Cancer-smoke kills and pollutes.

I can't watch porn until 18 or 21, but I can have sex at 14. What the fuck is this law doing existing? If I can see naked girls at the age of fourteen and make love so sweet Mrs. Buttersworth would be jealous and possibly get her pregnant, why the hell am I not allowed to jack off to the same thing on the internet? I can't be charged with rape, and I can't get anyone pregnant.

I have to be 18 to buy a gun, but at any age I can be legally given ownership of a long gun. WHY? Who is this dumbass that thinks this is a good idea? Granted, long guns aren't of much use except for hunting, but in that case, why can I not just go and buy one for myself? At least this way a background check would be in order.

I need to be 16 to drive a land vehicle, but only 12 to operate a boat! Boats are harder to steer than cars! I will give this one some slack, seeing as lakes and such aren't cramped and crowded like roads, but fucking 12!?

And Lord forbid you are 18 but are in a relationship with a girl one year younger than you. That would make you a pedophile and a registered sex offender if you are caught.

These are just some of the mentally disabling age restrictions we have here in the gold ol' USA.

Stay edgy and have a nice time.

Actually, if your within 2 years of the minor (in some areas), or if the relationship predates you turning 18, its not consindered pedophilia (Im pretty sure)

So if I started dating a 14 year old at 17, its ok.

Also, anti-porn laws arent really enforced on kids...

In some places if the age gap is over 2 years old they can prosecute for statutory rape...although it rarely happens since its consensual.

Also the anti-porn laws are meant to be enforced. Since the internet is publicly and universally accessible the only reason for the 18 or 21 age restriction is so the government can't be accused of letting minors watch adult and inappropriate content.

Also are you sure about this: "but I can have sex at 14." I'm pretty sure that's way to low.

I was wrong:

The federal law establishes the age of 12 as the minimum age of consent, while the age at which there are no restrictions for consensual sexual activities is 18 (sex with someone 12-18 is not illegal per se, but can still be open to prosecution under certain circumstances).

Driving a boat is much safer than driving a car. Not only are you going much slower, there are less obstacles and you don't have to worry about things hopping out in front of your vehicle. And while agree with lowering the drinking age, I don't see why you're mad that the smoking age is less. After all, why should government tell me whether I can hurt my body by smoking? Alcohol, however, poses more of a threat to others (though not in moderation).

And yeah, the law regarding porn is never enforced. Otherwise, porn sites would lose most of their ad income :)

Cannibis wasn't federally fuly illegalised until 1937 in America. Until then, legal. Smoking and alcohol both have addicting and unhealthy settings - don't seperate them, either be for both being legal, or both being illegal.

"Oh, but drunk people kill." 1) In moderation, alcohol is not life threatening nor debilitating

Well, moderate drunks aren't the problem, but there's still obviously an alcohol problem. Also, it's an addicting thing like any other drug - you don't want to be "moderate".

3) I can feel the hours and days of life leaving my lungs when I breathe in secondhand smoke. Cancer-smoke kills and pollutes.

Just hold your breath, mate. Do you always smell folks' breath when you know your nose is in the danger zone or something?

You can hide a handgun or a smg, but can you hide a long gun?

NO way?! Are you serious? Can I ask where you're getting this (just a google search?). What's wrong with America...really 12? Sexual maturity doesn't even start for males until around age 13!

If you smoke you only kill yourself, but a drunk person can kill multiple person (e.g. with a car), so that restriction is totally okay to me.

That was just a quick google search. There is nothing on the actual website I have found that denies any of it. In fact, it confirms that the unrestricted age starts (federally) at 16, so I see no reason to doubt any other number.

If you smoke you only kill yourself, but a drunk person can kill multiple person (e.g. with a car), so that restriction is totally okay to me.

Smoking affects everyone around you. A drunk man should not be driving, and if the US handled things like, say, Germany, then that would not be a problem.

Using that logic, handguns and smgs should never be legally sold.

Yeah, so let's keep letting drug-free people get cancer from second-hand smoke and let's go ahead and force people to pay for the insane medical bills racked up by addicts who won't stop themselves.

I'm all for universal healthcare, but if we shift over to that with our current levels of addiction we're going to have a massive financial burden from people who won't pay a cent of it back.

Stupidness correlates with youngness, and you are at more power to do something stupid with a handgun or smg than a long gun as it's hid-able.

Yeah, so let's keep letting drug-free people get cancer from second-hand smoke

Legalising usually leads to lowering of the drug using.

Drug tax can pay for all that.

Maybe you shouldn't be.

Switzerland. Great drug addiction rate in the 1980s. So, what did they do? Opened many reknacking sites, and within a year 2/3 heroin addicts in these reknacking sites quit their addiction (and they knew this since the renknacking sites gave out free heroin (very addicting drug) to addicts). It definitely gets paid back.

Does anyone else find this so very counter-intuitive?? I've seen the stats in places in Europe, but somehow it just doesn't click in my mind as a logical conclusion of making drugs easier to access. Although perhaps its behavioral psychology - the incentive for drug use is the fact its a rebellious action and therefore tempting for those (especially the young) trying to "protest" society?? I don't know...that's perhaps a stretch on my part.

Drug tax can pay for all that.

It seems ironic that we first want to legalize a vice, and then profit from those who have a vice. Its like the government legalizing gambling and then running ads non-stop for people to buy lotto tickets so the government can make money while average folk lose money.

Well, not only does the government profit from it, you can say it punishes by taking more money for this "vice", and forces only those involved to pay for the drug reknacking costs.

Well, to be frank, American government does that already. I think it's good, only folk dumb enough who know the odds but somehow believe in themselves being the exception have to pay.

Perhaps if the government stopped advertising the good of buying a lotto ticket, Americans would stop blowing $70 billion on them. The government is complicit in the activity. Make gambling legal, but the government shouldn't be profiting on other people's misfortune.

Then there'd just be more taxes, hurting those, even those poor folk who had the brains enough not to buy a lottery ticket. Tax should be as much choice-based as possible, and that's basically capitalism. Instead of communism, where you have to pay for it even if you don't want it, it should be based on paying for it if you want, and lottery is fully choice in America, as I understand. It's a kind of government spending that costs negatively (which means less taxes to get the same money), and I'm for that, as long as it keeps costing negatively.

Make gambling legal, but the government shouldn't be profiting on other people's misfortune.

It's not a misfortune if you do it to yourself. It's a choice that you make, and everybody should have the choice to do anything they want as long as it does not negatively affect other folk without consent. Allowing these "donations" to the government, like so, means that everyone else has to pay less taxes, and that I'm for.
