So, I'm back. It's been a few months ish, and I'd like to apologize for my past trolling. Sometimes my humor forgets that other people can get annoyed.

The last time I was here, I set up an imaginary stock market using Warlight's ladders as stocks. It ended poorly when I used an alt to toy around with influencing the numbers, but I still have a strong interest in investment, and would like to open something useful to the community. So, with that in mind:

I've discovered it is possible to track the values of real stocks, in realtime, using Google Spreadsheet functions. With this, it is possible to set up hypothetical portfolios and to watch the results as if they were true investments. The only problem I currently have is that I haven't figured out how to deal with dividend payments. If anyone could shed some light on that, it'd be useful.

Thus, our new forum game:

You've been given $4,000 to play the stock market! Let's assume no trading/management fees. Do some research, and, when you feel comfortable, announce your investments. I'll be posting a publicly viewable spreadsheet document that will track every portfolio in realtime soon.

Let's say that bonds and mutual funds, etc, are also allowable investments so long as the value can be tracked using the function =Googlefinance(x) or a similar method.

My own portfolio, currently based on my own real funds, is as follows;
Name: Share #
iShares Inv Grd Corp Bond ETF (LQD) 1.805954
Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) 2.63181
Vanguard Small Cap ETF (VB) 7.865027
Vanguard Emerging Markets (VWO) 20.571737
Vanguard REIT Index (VNQ) 13.20344
iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY) 2.12155

Started investing in November; currently up +6.65% for a total of (roughly) $3630.23.

Good luck! Hopefully some insights can be gained from this experiment.

Spreadsheet is up, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L5W3cbTbVIoCK3Z6gL5PArlt7sXKKruOE_InxWR0r2k/edit?usp=sharing. Anyone who would like to help manage the sheet is welcome to contact me.

Another minor edit to the guidelines:

If you choose to make a portfolio that is based on your real investments, you may deposit/withdraw funds here to reflect any changes you make to the real investment. Imaginary funds, however, will only change based on their own performance. I do ask that you maintain some degree of realism/honesty if you go this route, but there's no way I can enforce it. Lol.

Anyone want to help track it as an admin to the spreadsheet? Knyte? Benj? Dr. Stupid? Great Expanse? Others? Should be fun. :)

I do know what value investing is! The challenge with it is trying to determine, with limited info, whether it is truly an undervalued stock or whether its downward trend would continue.

I do indeed have an investing 'strategy'. Play for long-term growth and, for now, focus on index funds over individual stocks. We'll see if it pays off.

that's why you look at the company's fundamentals to determine whether it is undervalued or not

u calculate the intrinsic value and compare it to the market price

ive struggled with calculating intrinsic value but i find it relatively easy to do now

index fund is a nice strategy. it not good for me because you pretty much get market returns

it possibel to beat the market :)

Close to 85% of all investors, every year, fail to beat the market's return. I'm no god at this, I'm happy with just making solid calls. :)

true that

that mainly cus of behavioral psychology and a variety of biases that ppl have. if u learn to avoid and circumvent the biases that hinder us from making good returns then its possible to overcome the statistic that you cited

it still possible to do it. i can cite u a bunch of investors that has consistently beaten the market

in fact u can still take the index fund approach and still beat the market. for instance getting a basket of net nets or having a basket of magic formula stocks etc. just requires a little more effort then usual

regardless your approach is fine. as long u stick and persist with it

Halfway through today's market times, and it's looking rough for everyone!

All portfolios are sliding. Falconguy, yesterday's previous leader, is down -1.99%. GeneralPE is down -2.65% after going all in on Polaris Industries. Forbidden Assets, meanwhile is down -0.98%, leading the pack only by minimizing losses for today. By total value however, Falconguy is still solidly ahead at $3923.81. With three hours to go, there doesn't seem to be much chance of a turnaround, with all investors in the red.

Interestingly, Forbidden's portfolio has yet to give any high-yielding days since this post began tracking it, but it has managed to ride out the worst days better than the other portfolios. It remains to be seen whether that will pay off in the long term.
