no. Only with the permission of the mapmaker or if the map is grandfathered and fizzer permits you to.

That's debatable :D

But on the other hand i often wondered whether is it better to focus on creating new maps or improving the existing ones. The main problem i'm having with improving the old ones is that the improvements are often made but a single person and his views of what is balanced or not. Maybe there should first be a thread where more experienced players can state their opinion and explain why they think this will or will not work. Or maybe i'm just talking nonsense :D

I adopted the 4 castles map and feel that I improved it.

http://warlight.net/Map?ID=5052

Mainly I wanted to fix broken connections and bonuses... But with Fizzer's prodding I also brought the map up to current standards, to have connecting lines, numbers fitting inside, territories labeled, etc.

Finally, I added in alternative starting distributions that I think add a lot of dimensions to the otherwise monolithic map.

I don't think I changed any aspect of the map in a negative way, and feel that I only made improvements, thus taking one map and making it a bit better for all of us, rather than flooding Warlight with another map with more problems.

Sometimes the original creator just doesn't have the time to clean up minor aspects of the maps. I did.

But there's also the other side of the coin. The France Medium map (http://warlight.net/Map?ID=894) has only suffered from being adopted by Don Quixote. He added cities that add no strategy, as they often only connect to one other territory. It's impossible for a game maker to play without them, as they are part of the larger bonuses, and are the only way to get to Corsica. The original map didn't have those bonuses, and it was much more fun to play.

Unfortunately I don't quite remember how the old map looked so i can't judge the changes :). But it's nice that u took the time and updated it. I think there are a lot of interesting maps here that require just a little bit of attention and correction to make them good. Maybe we can make some sort of organization? (not sure that's the right word but..) of active mapmakers where we can work together and update some of the map that have been abandoned by their creators and still have potential.

Well I had this really good idea for "World Nations 2012" but the creator of it has been
un-active for months, so I guess that sucks.

Moros I thought you could now play old versions of a map if you wanted to.
