Welcome to Turn 8 of The Impaller versus The World, a game that everyone gets to participate in! For more information about the game, view this blog post.

The winning item from last time was number 6. Deploy 14 to Argentina and 1 to Svalbard. Play Order Priority. Transfer 4 to Argentina. Attack Danmark Havn with 4. Transfer 1 from Norway to Svalbard. Transfer 2 from Sweden to Norway.

Here's what we did:

Here's the outcome:

  • The World plays an order priority card

  • The World: Deploy 14 to Argentina

  • The Impaller: Deploy 4 to Venezuela

  • The Impaller: Deploy 8 to Colombia

  • The World: Deploy 1 to Svalbard

  • The World: 4 armies transferred to Argentina from Brazil

  • The Impaller: 21 armies failed to take Argentina from Colombia. 13 attacking armies killed, 13 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 4 armies captured Danmark Havn from Svalbard. 2 attacking armies killed, 2 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 1 army transferred to Svalbard from Norway

  • The Impaller: 2 armies captured Cuba from Venezuela. 0 attacking armies killed, 1 defending armies killed.

  • The Impaller: 2 armies captured Brazil from Venezuela. 1 attacking armies killed, 1 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 2 armies transferred to Norway from Sweden

  • The World received a reinforcement card and still has a blockade card. 3/5 delay, 2/6 pri, 8/19 blockade.

Here are our options:

  1. Goal: Maintain presence in South America (Argentina) and protect Antarctica. Begin moving towards taking the Greenland bonus.
-Play reinforcement card. Deploy 7 to Danmark Havn and 13 to Argentina. Attack Kangerlussuaq with 4. Attack Itseqqortoormiit with 4. Transfer 1 to to Danmark Havn. Transfer 2 to Svalbard.

  2. Goal: Maintain presence in South America (Argentina) and protect Antarctica. Begin slowly taking the rest of the Greenland bonus. Move into Africa to border East Africa.
-Play reinforcement card. Deploy 4 to Novolazerevskaya, 3 to Danmark Havn and 13 to Argentina. Attack Kangerlussuaq with 4. Transfer 1 to Danmark Havn. Transfer 2 to Svalbard. Attack South Africa with 4.

  3. Goal: Maintain presence in South America (Argentina) and protect Antarctica. Continue taking the Greenland bonus, relying on some luck.
-Play reinforcement card. Deploy 5 to Danmark Havn and 15 to Argentina. Attack Kangerlussuaq with 3. Attack Itseqqortoormiit with 3. Transfer 1 to Danmark Havn. Transfer to 1 Svalbard.

  4. Goal: Maintain presence in South America (Argentina) and protect Antarctica. Continue to slowly take the Greenland bonus. Move towards India.
-Play reinforcement card. Deploy 4 to Ufa, 3 to Danmark Havn and 13 to Argentina. Attack Kangerlussuaq with 4. Transfer 1 to Danmark Havn. Transfer 2 to Svalbard. Attack Eastern Kazakhstan with 4.

  5. Goal: Save reinforcement card for next turn's attack on East Africa if Impaller is found to occupy that bonus. Move into Africa in force. Deny the total removal of our forces from Central America.
-Deploy 4 to Argentina. Deploy 1 to Mexico. Deploy 10 to Novolazerevskaya. Transfer 1 to Danmark Havn. Transfer 2 to Svalbard. Attack South Africa with 10.

  6. Goal: Maintain presence in South America (Argentina) and protect Antarctica. Continue slowly taking the Greenland bonus. Move into Africa and Australia.
-Play reinforcement card. Deploy 2 to Danmark Havn, 4 to Novolazerevskaya, 4 to Scott and 10 to Argentina. Attack Kangerlussuaq with 3. Transfer 1 to Danmark Havn. Transfer 2 to Svalbard. Attack Tasmania with 4. Attack South Africa with 4.

I'm curious why people think he took Cuba. It seems odd to me. I guess he was concerned that he would get South America but we would be able to retake it via Cuba? But if that were the case, shouldn't he take Panama as well? Maybe just for the card piece?

i believe he took cuba because now he has an untouchable piece of land in SA, so if we wanted to take him out in SA, we don't have the option.

He may have just been trying to ensure he got a card by sending 2 to Brazil and 2 to Cuba, assuming we'd probably leave one of then undefended.

He took Brazil with two, when we had 5 armies there to start the turn, so he expected it to be empty at the end of the turn. From his perspective, we could have gone to Africa, reinforced Argentina, or attacked him. He put enough armies there to prevent an attack from our five army brazil from working, and then with two late moves, sent two each into two territories. It's a multipurpose move.

We should look at gradually taking South Africa

I like 3 the best, but I think it's a mistake to go into Eastern Kazakhstan when the path via Georgia and Iran is just as fast, and Iran is in my experience far more strategically important than anything in the caucasus, not to mention closer to the equally important egypt.

Yeah, you guys should totally go Georgia - Iran, that'll work!

I like this board a hell of a lot better. We got an income edge and the card and superior position.

I was hoping Imp would hit argentina with less so we'd get a better result.

BTW - In addition to the other reasons cited -- Imp's real intent is to take SA. It's the been the bonus in play since the start and Imp has deployed 100% of his income to hold his blocks and try and take it every turn since the start. He loses if we get it and reverses position if he takes it. Which is why I keep voting against squandering resources on ventures elsewhere on the map.

Without looking at the options my thought is that we can afford to set a good block in Argentina and make another move elsewhere this turn. I like heading south in Greenland or going for South America -- but not both. Because if we go to SA we'll be putting all our income there for the next few turns anyway so why not use the extra 3 there this turn. Also waiting to expand in Greenland gives us time to slide the extra 3 in Scan there.

First question is what's the block? Does Imp have a card? Without a card we need at least 17, with a card we need 21. Anybody know if he gets one this turn (I think he missed 2 card pieces along the way).

If it's 17, then we can send 8 at South Africa. If it's 21 we can send 4. One or the other is what I think is the best option. Since I think he doesn't have one I like:

Deploy 11 argentina and 8 Antartica, Advance the 1 and 2 in Scan and then Attack South Africa with 8.

I would put 3 in Danmark h. and attack Itseqq. to get a card, deploy rest in Argentina. do both transfers too.

attacking S. Africa is also viable but i prefer putting most resources in Argentina

another idea is to try to deny him another card, reinforcing Mexico (2), panama (5), danmark for card (3) and rest in argentina.

Duke u can use 1 more to deploy, u used only 19

Ahh yes that would make that a bad idea then.. I admit, this is the only turn I looked at, and I suck at 1v1 so you probably shouldn't listen to my fail advice anyways...

Based on feedback I boosted SA to 21 and made it just 4 into SA. If he's in EA, we won't have an enough to be sure of the bust, but we have less downside if he's not in EA.
