So the game between these two great players just finished. What are your thoughts about their picks and their gameplay?

on turn 3 oliebol should go full power SEA.
oliebol make risky picks, teddy very safe pick. thought he could get countered on CA combo.
match was decided when teddy fold SEA for toward caucasus.
gg.

From the few games I saw Oliebol likes to pick unconventional in high-end-games, thus emphasizing on the 'surprise factor'. In the game against Timinator he argued for this strategy for example as this made for a more dynamic and less conservative gameplay.
That makes for highly attractive games, but it makes him vulnerable if he doesn't play it out perfectly or the enemy 'smells' fast enough what Oliebol is up to. Here it was, as Gnuffone pointed out correctly, the missing attack on SEA turn 3 that decided the game (maybe Oliebol thought Teddy had Indonesia with the ftb - or greenland - the only other good two picks besides the ca/sa combo). I think it was already over by then more than when Teddy gave up SEA to break Caucasus, because this was only a logical consequence.

What were teddy's thoughts at the end of turn 2?

Did Ollie pick better but played the picks out imperfectly so deserved the loss?

Good game.

Teddy played very well, move into iran was game winner, helped a lot by all the delay moves in samerica as well though.

Which turn? He went to brazil with a few more than he needed to check if ollie was there and if he was to fight him. He used leftovers as delays so that his last move happened after ollies last move, giving teddy the freedom to attack with everything and not have ollie recomplete his bonuses with a 2v1 last move.

This game is amazing imo.
It was very balanced. Very well played from both sides. The game was decided in the last turn (I think :p) wich was well done by Falker.

GG to both players.

The Teddy vs Ollie game was already lost after picking. Teddy had safe boni and Ollie had a cluster of three with Teddy on the borders. No way.

The wasteland in Iran gave false safety to Ollies picks. He schould have tried to keep the stacks below 20 by attacking constantly, but then he simply couldnt do that due to lower income early on. And even then thru XinJiang was another easy way. And giving up SEA against Caucasus is always good. So, no way he could have won.

Ollie could have won if on turn 3 he had gone into pakistan with 5, not an unreasonable move given his position. It wouldnt have slowed down the taking of any bonuses unless he missed a 3v2 in scand.

He also could have won if he had gotten west russia and had attacked pakistan turn 5 with everything. Teddy wouldnt have had the 16ish left needed to take the wasteland down and would have lost about 7 armies just for trying.

Teddy vs. Oliebol : small things to correct on early turns in Oliebol's sequences imo. Turn 2 : Georgia to West Kaz could/should be attack-only, to focus on W Russia. Turn 3 : Kyrgiz to Tadschik should come sooner to hide the fact he actually had Kyrgyz. On turn 3 it was clear to Teddy that Oliebol had completed Caucasus first or second, not just an possibility (he saw the move), with a likely combo from Russia after facing a more static army because of the major +5 asset. So basically it was uneven from turn 3 on anyway.
