I've always liked Gustavus Adolphus, the Swedish King who led his men into battle personally, and died a hero. Had he lived, the Swedish empire would've been much grander.

Alexander the Great - Never lost a battle, fucked the Gordian Knot, conquered more territory than Rome ever owned, became a Pagan god-king through his death.
Harald Hardrada - Conquered a walled city by lighting birds on fire.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi - Thought building a castle in one night was a good idea, and was right. He is also the least scummy of the 3 Japanese Unifiers, imho, and the only one of them that can truly be considered a hero. Rose through the ranks as a nobody, showing that hard work can pay off, regardless of class.
Frederick the Great - Potatoes and Epic Rap Battles.
Abraham Lincoln - Dude kept the United States united. That means a lot more than what it does at face value.

Adolf Hitler killed 6 million people, and started a war Alexander the Great killed his best friend King Arthur didn't actually exist All the other people weren't particularly wonderful either, except for: Erwin Rommel Abraham Lincoln Norman Borlaug King David (Okay, this may be a bit ridiculous, but I like him) Nelson Mandela (Who's Ian Smith?) Ferid Murad Robert Lee and the greatest... Albert Einstein

Being serious, I'd say FDR (and his wife, Eleanor, who was basically his eyes and ears outside the White House and Washington). He was able to take the US out of the depression with the production needed to aid the Allies in WW2 and eventually the American War Machine after Pearl Harbor. He also was able to keep America somewhat stable during the depression, and made many reforms that bettered the US during the depression, like the CCC that planted trees and gave unemployed and unmarried men 18-23 (and later 17-28) a job and eventually led to many of them joining the Army just in time for WW2.
He also did this with polio.

@Zaphod I think Sun Tzu should be added to that list -_- Considering his book is still thought to this day and he was one of the greatest tacticians, ever, of all time
