With movies like Red Dawn (very good movies actually, both the original and the remake from a few years ago) and video games like the Home front series (another one I loved) and COD Ghosts (that game was complete shit in my opinion) using an invaded and conquered America as a basis for their plot, this brings an interesting question. Can the United States be successfully invaded?

This is a debate and no one has ever successfully invaded the US (aside from the war of 1812, which was a stalemate after the burning of Washington).

My answer is no. First, LOOK at the US Military, while not the largest (North Korea, South Korea and China top it, looking at active and reserve troops) with just over 2 million troops (active and reserved), it is the most technologically advanced, well equipped, and funded military in human history. The US Navy is larger than the next 3 largest navies combine and the US Air Force is also larger than the next 3 largest Air Forces combined. The US has the second largest Nuclear stockpile (behind Russia, and no China isn't even close to either of them). The average US Soldier (in the Army) is equipped with over 42 thousand US dollars worth of equipment. With these simple factors, if the entire US military was pulled back to the Continental US alone (abandoning Alaska, Hawaii, and other US possessions, like Guam and Puerto Rico), the US Military could hold off any invasion. With air support tearing the hostile armor and air force to shreads, the battered troops would then be faced with the US Marines and Army, with Paratroopers from the 101st and 82nd dropping in to support the Marines and Army, or even behind the enemy, much like Operation Overlord during WWII.

This is where the fun begins.

If the slim possibility that the US Military is defeated (or obliterated) by the invading force (not by nuclear weapons, as that would made the acronym M.A.D come to life), the US has the best armed Civilian population in the world, with an estimated 100 million gun owners and estimated 300 million guns. The US has around 340 Million citizens, so those 300 million guns could arm almost the entire population, making the Militia of the United States the largest military the Earth has ever seen. Many Veterans are still at a fighting age (younger than 42, according to the US Army), and would definitely rise as leaders. If the Government still existed and the ENTIRE US MILITARY AND POPULATION OF 340 MILLION PEOPLE WAS DEFEATED, the American Nuclear stockpile of over 1500 warheads would be deployed, as American Leaders would have nothing to lose, so the attacking country would be laid to waste.

Does anyone have a logical way the US would be defeated? In Frontline (and perhaps Red Dawn too, however I'm not sure) the US was hit by an EMP that brought down all satellites and communications, so that could give early advances by the attackers. In Red Dawn, a combined force of North Koreans, Russians, and Cubans (I believe that was the involved parties, might have had the Chinese as well) invaded the US through Alaska-Canada, the West Coast, and Florida while dropping Paratroopers into major cities.

Not in this decade, and likely not the next. Folk are going to call me nationalist for this, but the US has a great geographic position. Two weak allies and two large oceans which are defended by the largest navy in the world by tonnage.

And yea, I doubt someone can invade Murica; and the same goes for China. Their armies are way too powerful and have too much men. You can probably bomb till there's only dust left and conquer a giant desert though. However they may decide to bomb you till there's only dust left to get some revenge.

Yes, but there would be more of a coalition of countries,most likely unsuspected, and from all sides, but still the U.S. has some very difficult terrain, and many large rivers so it won't happen quickly, but It could happen

Errm nu. Both nations have close to 5k in storage with each having a little over 1500 active and wartime ready.

Russia has more nukes than the US however most are outdated because of the old USSR Era rockets they are attached to. Soviet rockets are known to be poorly buult. It's likely the US has many Cold War nukes as well but their rockets would be better anyway.

In all honesty we won't know the real number of nukes each state has as that would be, of course, top secret information. So it's only natural that we would find different numbers anyway.

The US is friends with Canada, and economic buds with Mexico, so it doesn't have to fear being attacked from the North or South, unless Canada and Mexico were to be invaded first, which would start a World War. In which case, the force that includes Italy at the end will win.

But if that doesn't happen, the US needs only fear two giant oceans, separating it from the rest of the world, a world in which the US has many embassies and bases.

Assuming a country or joint coalition of countries dumb enough to set foot on US soil actually make it that far, they will be met with the US military. But before that, they will have to march on the population, a gun-toting population, that knows its own terrain. The Bloods and Crips have decided to set aside their differences and band together in case ISIS would somehow reach California; I'm sure the people of the country will do the same in case of an invasion.

So no. The entire world would have to turn on the US to defeat it, but at that point it's all a matter of which countries can launch their nukes faster.
