What if China sanctioned the US?: 9/1/2016 21:35:01

This was a discussion that happened today- with the rising US-Chinese tensions, what would happen if China sanctions the US?

In other words,
- all American companies can no longer produce and manufacture in China
- no exporting to the US or importing from the US
- US travel ban

Would China suffer more, or the US? And could America rebuild its entire manufacturing sector after decades of steady decline?

Both would suffer. For China it would be basically a knife in the throat but America does have the ability to take care of a lot of that stuff themselves. Taxes are pretty high though, which will have to change. Besides, we can always rely on japan and korea to send us cheap crap

About 20% of the US's imports are from China, that's fairly large, not something the US can just shrug off. Mexico and Canada only send to the US about 13, 12 %, and they're connected directly to the US.

Maybe already said, but we feed China. If they pulled one on us, we could just use Bangladesh, Thailand and Indonesia. You don't just get tons of corn from anywhere

China ranks first in worldwide farm output, primarily producing rice, wheat, potatoes, tomato, sorghum, peanuts, tea, millet, barley, cotton, oilseed and soybeans. Although accounting for only 10 percent of arable land worldwide, it produces food for 20 percent of the world's population.

The US don't feed China. What feeds China are the millions of ha of fertile land they bought in Africa, Asia, South America, Australia and now even Europe and the US.

Even though China is still highly dependent of occidental countries, that is getting less and less important by each day that goes by. Internal consumption is already way more important than exports for the chinese economy.

Bottom line, China could sanction the US, that'd be awful for both, but neither would die off it; a few years of recession in the US, maybe just a stagnant economy for a couple of years, while China would just lose a lot of it's growth, but hardly get into a recession, although I believe that they would need more time to go back to "normal".

Like PE said, it would be deadly for China. If the government made some bad decisions then, China could economically collapse.

The US would be thrown into shock, but it would be the government's #1 policy to get as many people into the factories as possible.

And with so many people being outsourced or unemployed, the factories could fill up quickly.

Funny enough, Russia is ammoung the few countries that will gain agricultural production in the next years due to climate change. With more heat, loads of land that were unfited for agriculture are becomming.
