i just started a day ago and by many standards am considered a newb. i see this word/phrase "the ladder" popping up all over the place - can someone explain to me what the ladder is and how it works?
is it just a ranking system? if so, how does it work?
i have already played a bunch of multiplayer games, does that affect my ranking?

Members constantly play against each other in games where results give them a ranking. You can see the ratings they have in the list on the "Home" page, left table.

Yes, you have to buy a membership to participate in the ladder.

tournaments are free to join, but you have to be a member to create them. try going to the 'open tournaments' section of the tournaments page (under the multiplayer tab).
