Hello, everyone. I am posting this forum because I want duplicate accounts to be not allowed on Warlight.net. I have been dealing with this problem over the course of this week and a little bit of last week, but I think the person who has created the duplicate account has been banned. So, to prevent duplicate accounts with the same name on Warlight.net, I think that every username on Warlight.net should be unique, and no one else can use that username, or even put spaces at the end or beginning, but they can still use that username, just have it lowercased and/or capitalized in different places than the other username, and have numbers or symbols at the end or the beginning. I want you, Fizzer, and everyone else to read this forum. I am pointing this out to everyone because duplicate accounts are obnoxious, ridiculous, idiotic, and annoying. If anyone supports me, please post under this thread. Thank you for your posts!

I hope security measures similar to this are taken towards duplicate accounts!

Well you see, there's this problem that they've been allowed for over 3 years now (according to http://warlight.net/News.aspx) and there are certainly some perfectly peaceful people who have clashing usernames and who wouldn't want them changed.

(Personally, if someone changed *my* username to include some random numbers at the end, I'd hurt him. It's perfect the way it is, and I consider people who need to add numbers to get an unique one uncreative.)

I'd also prefer that usernames be unique, but first, it's a big design decision that'd be hard to change now (as I explained), and second, Fizzer has a kind-of good reason for this - if you just play with your friends, you might appreciate being able to choose a name such as Jake or Annie.

----

And while we're at it, here's a constructive and viable solution: if you want to be a public, easily identifiable person who can't be impersonated, **you could have an option to show your e-mail in it's entirety**, and possibly also under your nick on forums. I would certainly want it - I use the same nick all over the Internet, my e-mail is not hidden (you could find it in 15 seconds googling; hell, you could even find my real name if you cared), and GMail's spam filter easily weeds out the 30+ spam messages I get every day - I couldn't care less about it being shown. When I want a particular account of mine at a particular website not associated with me, I simply don't use my usual nick nor my real e-mail.

Right, Matma Rex, your idea is good on the papers, but having a GMail account myself, I am not so satisfied with the spam filtering system. I occasionally get mails from senders I don't know, mark them as spam without opening them and after a day or two I see again the same message from the same sender, as if I did nothing. Do you know how I can fix that? (Well, I don't expect much from someone having given his real name on the internet, sorry but I can't pretend not to have seen that...) Now for the number issue, you can choose numbers that mean something to you. Not your birthdate or any other info that can be directly associated with you, but you can include a number that has to do with your favourite football team. For example if you are an AC Milan fan, you can put the number 14 aside your nick, as this team has won 14 UEFA trophies. Or you can choose the number of your favourite player. Or the total number of titles the team has won. Or you can choose another topic where numbers are involved, e.g. cars or bikes. Putting numbers at the end of a nickname isn't necessarily uncreative... It can very well mean something else. What's more, if you don't want numbers, you can choose the name of a song you like, just like I did (Creeping death is a Metallica song, in case you didn't know). Hope this helps.

I assume GMail uses some kind of learning Bayesian filter - that's also common for all users - so just one report won't change anything. The spam filter works quite well with actual spam messages. If what you're getting is not strictly spam (some stupid newsletter you agreed to a year ago, some spam-like junk that's technically not spam, some dude that just won't let go), just define a filter yourself. It's super-easy to do - there's an option in the extended actions of every e-mail, in the new layout you can use the expanded search field for this, or you could just go to the settings -> Filters tab.

|> I don't expect much from someone having given his real name on the internet, sorry but I can't pretend not to have seen that...

I only associate this nick and thus indirectly my name with websites I wouldn't mind being identified with, and I don't think I have any crucial information associated with it. You wouldn't really find much anyway - my first name easily, my surname after some digging, my approximate age if you were determined, and possibly my address with ~50 km accuracy if you really wanted to track me down and could speak Polish (I already said even on these forums that I'm Polish, this is not hidden at all). I honestly don't care if you know any of these things.

###

For me, a nick should be first of all pronounceable. Therefore numbered nicks are a bit silly to me. (But that's just my opinion, of course.)

Thanks for the advice, Matma. And no, I am not interested in finding anything about you or anyone else over here. I am not the kind of person to poke my nose in others' lives, as I don't like others poking their noses in my life.

Yeah, but still, people can still duplicate your username and cyberbully you, harass you, post ridiculous forums under your username. So, if every username was unique, this could be prevented or at least, decreased. And if every account had to be unique, then when the update happened, the people who duplicated the original username from someone else would get a message telling them they had a set number of days to change them, but they don't have to change them completely, just slightly, like add numbers at the end.

And what of the people who have legitimate duplicate IDs?

Say I joined with this name unwittingly knowing that some previous member had claimed it. Does that mean I automatically lose the name even though they no longer play the game? I am sure there are a decent number of purely innocent overlaps with people who don't want to see their name change and shouldn't have to either.

Add in the confusion of name-changing being allowed and how do you police previous names? Does one person get the rights to EVERY name they have used? Or merely their current?

I'm guessing that there's a hexidecimal or numeric player ID that IS unique underlying each user account. Perhaps Fizzer could expose that on the profile so while people could still choose duplicate names, there'd be a quick & easy way to verify who is whom.

Yes, so it could already be used to distinguish one player from another when their usernames are identical, but perhaps it could be put into a more prominent location just for convenience...

Maybe so, though I would imagine an easier method would be to use the join date as an identifier.

duplicate names are ok imho, but when there is a clear abuse, I think Fizzer or admins should warn or ban the individuals faster.
I like reading the forums but all those recent posts with the 2 accounts spamming just annoys me (and I'm sure loads of other players as well), and that's a bad thing.
Respecting Fizzer's policies, I would opt for more moderating on the forums. It's a great game and most of the players are mature and friendly, so don't risk to destroy that by giving abusers too much freedom.

You get mad at being viewed as an object that is without a personal identifier, and then view people that choose to allow a personal identifier as unreliable..

Madtown/wargeneral

The real war general had seemed to be trolling before the fake war general even arrived.. I see the fake war general as a moot process, whoever did it is either the real war general, trolling for trolling's sake, or someone else trying to hurt war generals already damaged reputation..

there was a game I played once, that had unique names for everyone.. to be cute, I made duplicates of one of my friends names.. his name was Metro.. I created 15 different accounts, 7 of which looked almost indistinguishable from his name at a glance, while the other 8 were pretty easily noticeable.. destroying unique names to prevent harassment will just hurt honest players trying to play as *george smith* and make them have to be *george smith 9999*, and will do nothing whatsoever to prevent cyberbully's from cyberbullying.

@ Perrin: You misunderstood what I told Matma Rex. It's one thing to be yourself and another thing to reveal personal data. I manage to be myself without revealing any personal data. You just have to be careful in order to achieve that. It's not that hard. And as for duplicate accounts, I agree with Chaos. There need to be moderators who will check which duplicates are innocent and which try to make original accounts look bad. Maybe people who have studied logics can help there.
