This is assuming that the intruder comes at night, as most invasions do. If it's nighttime, I'll be in bed. And if the gun is within my reach, as it would be, then unless the intruder is superhuman, there's no way he can get to the gun before I can.
Not every child is disciplined enough to stay away from a gun even if you told to.
I agree 100%. However, if your child isn't disciplined enough to not play with guns, you shouldn't have guns at all, locked away or not, because they will find a way to get into it sooner or later. They'll find the key, see you put in the passcode, whatever--you
will slip up eventually. But if you can discipline them, you won't need to lock the guns away. If you can't, don't own guns.
