Just a thought, it would be possible to make a map the essentially dictated this style of play without having to depend on peoples good will. All you would have to do is give each player a territory(call it territory A) that wasn't connected to anything else as well as the flag territory. Then you just make territory A a -100 bonus and the flag + A a +100 bonus.

That would work except that capturing a new flag would give you a -100 bonus.

@Nudge: No, you would have to capture Territory A to get the -100 bonus.

@General: I think if you draw a picture it will help you understand. Just to be more clear...

Territory A: Unconnectted to anything.
Flag territory: Your flag.

- 100 bonus={Territory A}
+ 100 Bonus= {Territory A,Flag}

Everyone gets one of each territory.

This would however make it so the game never ended without surrendurs... Perhaps you would also need a game ender spot which connects to all of the Territory A's, and put a huge amount of neutrals there.

Actually to avoid getting +100 when capturing enemy flag you would need 2 spots.

Each flag consist of A-B-C

A is flag in play

B = -1000
AC = +1000

Capturing A yields -1000 to opponent without giving a bonus. (A could have a small bonus of its own.

have all B's and C's linked to territory with the large neutrals.

Also make owning all 4 A's = to 10,000 armies and you will be able to take out neutral to kill stubborn players in 1 turn.

uhm.. you're playing a variant, if the people aren't willing to surrender when they've *lost* then just blacklist them and make a new game, variants require honor above gameplay

I think I see where cowmandude is coming from...

F - This is for the flag.
A - This is a territory.

A = -100
F+A = +100
F = 0

I don't see the problem with this, though...

A <-> F <-> Other.

Once the flag is taken, the -100 bonus is no longer canceled by the +100. The person who takes the flag has the power to decide when territory A should be taken. The only problem would be if someone put a lot of armies in Territory A, but that is very unlikely.

in either case, it would make abandon/blockade/gift cards unviable in those games..

Sorry, I didn't realize the +,-'s would turn to bullets which I think took away clarity in my last post.

@Bakarin Even if they did, the player with the map will always be in a much better place. In fact its pretty easy to see that your better off putting your troops on your flag instead of on A

@Perrin To continue to expand on the idea you could replace Territory A by a set of 10 territories which all together gave +1000 but any subset containing 9 territories gives -100. That would make it less vulnerable to abandon/gift/blockade. At least it would require 9 such cards to effectively screw the system. This could be extended to provide protection from any number of cards.

What if the only territories with any value on the map were the "throne" room territories? You could do something like every 3 territories captured is worth an additional 1 territory, like real risk, so once a person loses his/her throne, the base income drops enough so the person is no longer competitive? This would give incentive to not "camp" and also to attack other thrones; but it would also not completely unbalance the game if someone controls 2 throne rooms because you can still gain income via taking territories. Not sure if I explained that well.

Here is my first completed king of the castle game

i started this before posting here. this was played with normal fog however after i started this i thought light fog would be better so you can monitor when castles have been taken
