YouTube has begun to implement its new feature that places "offensive" content in a limited state. Time will tell what effect this will have on the public discourse.

The feature seems to have backfired and has led to limited state videos receiving far more views than they otherwise would have. This is simply because people like taboo, people like to discover what is considered offensive and why. The limited state videos are being shared off-site and there are currently users dedicated to compiling lists of such videos.

YouTube censorship and copyright enforcement is a joke.

For each "bad" video their bots take down about nine innocent videos are hit as well.

They basically code their bots to blind fire and think that'll fix the "problems".

YouTube has really shown us that it doesn't care. What was once a platform for independent content creators is now a stream-based platform that increasingly promotes the same fake news corporate media that one could find on cable television.

Some channels are using Patron to host their videos (at a price) instead of using YouTube.

Independent, intelligent people that want to have an actual discourse ought to start opposing these policies. We're already seeing it happen and I think eventually we will win. It isn't just the "Neo-Nazis" and the "alt-right" that face censorship - though those groups do have a right to free speech. A Finnish woman had her video thrown in the gulag for simply criticizing mass immigration. Socially acceptable opinions ebb and flow anyway - what is acceptable now will be unacceptable in a few decades. The very existence of a censorship framework is problematic.

Corporations such as Google and Facebook that work with the US government and host mass communication should not be able to violate users' 1st amendment rights (if you're not in the US, like the EU or the UK, you're really up shit creek as far as avoiding censorship goes).

Remember back when Theresa May was announcing that she was implementing her own version of the Patriot Act in Britain, named Snooper's Charter? The idea had been bouncing between the Conservatives for a while, and it was really only Our Lord And Saviour Nick Clegg that stopped it from being implemented at some point in Cameron's first term.

This is relevant because the reaction to it from various groups, notably Styxenhammer's watchers in particular (but also others- notably the fans tend to be the same guys subscribed to several channels, one might assume they have nothing better to do), is remarkably similar to the reaction to this Youtube censorship.

"Muh left-wing censorship" is what you'll hear from this group. yeah... no. You don't have to be an alt-right traditionalist to get your videos mass-flagged, it's happening to leftist channels and even apolitical channels as well.

Something that entertains me is watching the hyper-capitalist "nothing could EEEVERRR go wrong with a free market" fools like PJW desperately try to come up with reasons why this is happening, aside from corrupt corporatism.

But don't worry, the CEO's a Jew. *that's* why the censorship's happening. Pfft, corporatism my ass.

That's what I just said you totally jumped the gun, the censorship is aimed at people who aren't totally right wing too.

Google is simply following EU censorship laws and appeasing the international community. The problem is multiculturalism and globalism. Crony capitalism is only possibly through state intervention.

Odd you would mention Jews, because Google has explicitly stated they are using feedback from the ADL to decide what content will be censored.

Let's be honest though Ox. You won't find a bunch of videos of Antifa threatening to beat people up on the YouTube forbidden list. You literally won't - there are people recording everything that gets thrown into the gulag. Most of it is right wing in nature.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff) an organization dedicated to the free flow of information online has discussed the perils of mass-censorship. In the context of the violence at Charlottesville Virginia online service providers have acted to censor various content. The eff have responded by publishing an article discussing these actions.

Link: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/08/fighting-neo-nazis-future-free-expression

It is explained that under U.S. Law service providers have a right to control content which they publish. And search engines companies, of which Google is the preeminent example, may choose to exclude from search results anything on an arbitrary basis.

Because Internet intermediaries, especially those with few competitors, control so much online speech, the consequences of their decisions have far-reaching impacts on speech around the world.

The known quality of Google as a search engine has lead to its having gained what is close to a monopolistic control of its market. In the case of YouTube the amount of content downloaded per minute is in excess of 500 Hours, according to a 14 November 2015 article.

Link: http://tubularinsights.com/hours-minute-uploaded-youtube/

The result of all this is that the decisions of a very small number of people have far reaching power.

In the conclusion of the eff article they observe:

It might seem unlikely now that Internet companies would turn against sites supporting racial justice or other controversial issues. But if there is a single reason why so many individuals and companies are acting together now to unite against neo-Nazis, it is because a future that seemed unlikely a few years ago—where white nationalists and Nazis have significant power and influence in our society—now seems possible. We would be making a mistake if we assumed that these sorts of censorship decisions would never turn against causes we love.

Part of the work for all of us now is to push back against such dangerous decisions with our own voices and actions. Another part of our work must be to seek to shore up the weakest parts of the Internet’s infrastructure so it cannot be easily toppled if matters take a turn for the (even) worse. These actions are not in opposition; they are to the same ends.

We can—and we must—do both

They are wise to remind us that the powers that are exercised against groups that you may well disprove of, can as easily be used against groups that you approve of. Their point is to remind us of a salient point. All of us are vulnerable. Which is why we must do all we can to make our rights to free speech something more than a pious utterance.

As if censoring YouTube videos is going to stop the alt right (which I happily consider myself a part of) anyway. As if it makes their arguments incorrect.

Those feelings just get bottled up somewhere else in some echo chamber. Without any discourse, without
any room for sane discussion I would expect more violent attacks from political active groups.

If Google et al. are concerned with violent groups in general, why weren't they censoring Antifa after the Steve Scalise shooting, Bernie Sanders supporters after this incident http://dailycaller.com/2017/05/28/portland-killer-is-an-anti-circumcision-bernie-sanders-supporter/

and Black Nationalists after this shit http://www.reuters.com/article/us-california-shooting-idUSKBN17L31X

Google, a company that proudly displayed the African continent in a BLM doodle and highlights/co-produces pro-mass immigration propaganda, is of course, a complete fucking partisan company that has no universal threshold for censorship.

When you have an oligopoly of tech firms with employees and managers from the same demographic and of the same political socialization, tech firms that fire political dissenters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN1vEfqHGro) you cannot expect their platforms to be fair.

YouTubers such as Varg Vikernes, styxhexenhammer, and other independent creators that produce edgy content are beginning to branch out to other websites. If YouTube screws over its userbase they will simply find a better website. The biggest obstacle is a societal refusal - a democratic hive-minded refusal - to do business with "Nazis" i.e. entrepreneurs who want to create a space for actual discourse. It is hard for these people to acquire resources.

Censorship in 1984-style governments such as the EU is also a huge obstacle to internet free speech and of course those laws have nothing to do with capitalism and everything to do with leftist moralism.

Any individual or any group can censor. If someone calls in a bomb threat to stop a speaking event, they are engaged in censorship.

The US government cannot legally censor speech under the 1st amendment. Companies that host mass communication have done so, but we are arguing that they cant. And we want to change the laws to force them to allow free speech, because of their size and influence and the fact they work with governmemt agencies.

Another reason is, companies can't abuse people just because they're not part of the government. Neither a company or the government under the US constitution can invade your privacy or seize your property by force. The first amendment should apply to all areas of public communication.

Here's a great example: CNN DOXES a teenager who makes a Trump meme. They blackmail him into silence by threatening to release his info to the public at any time. They force him to apologize for making a fucking funny gif of Trump wrestling CNN superimposed to the ground.

Has this person been censored? By a company? Yes! YES!
