Cata don't be so bolshie

I'm not sure how I feel about Unions. They certainly bring short term perks to those under them , the questions is if long term it makes them less competitive with non unionized sectors of the industry or non unionized international trade. I guess if Unions are reasonable they can barter an agreement that is acceptable to all sides , potential bringing in better workers but from my limited understanding often they start asking for too much.

Historically afaik they've been heavily politicised - I don't know if it's a common practice or very rare - but I've heard voting for a certain party as a prerequisite for unionisation which is grubby.

Like I've said my knowledge is based on personal experience with a few people who have had contact or been part of unions in the past and small amounts of text about them. As such it may suffer from implicit Bias but I'd be interested in hearing more perspectives.

Is giving more power to the workers a fundamentally good, or flawed idea? Proponents of capitalism (not crony capitalism where the state is involved) are quick to point out that any intelligent individual with the right skill set can become an entrepreneur. In other words capitalism allows money to flow to the most intelligent individuals. True capitalism is the celebration and empowerment of beauty and the full human potential.

At one point in history the head of the household's income was enough to pay for everyone. That was before the welfare state, single mom epidemic, and mounting debt.

Okay, so if we created a thread about every insignificant holiday worldwide, we would be flooded...

Well, I respectfully disagree.

This holiday is a reminder of the efforts made, in the past and in the present, on behalf of the workers both of my country and of the world. While most of the world celebrates May Day as the observance for workers, that day in part commemorates Chicago's Haymarket Massacre.

The Haymarket Massacre was the aftermath of a bombing that took place at a labor demonstration on Tuesday May 4, 1886, at Haymarket Square in Chicago.

"No single event has influenced the history of labor in Illinois, the United States, and even the world, more than the Chicago Haymarket Affair. It began with a rally on May 4, 1886, but the consequences are still being felt today. Although the rally is included in American history textbooks, very few present the event accurately or point out its significance," William J. Adelman

The Haymarket Affair took on worldwide dimension in July 1889, when a delegate from the American Federation of Labor recommended at a labor conference in Paris that May 1 be set aside as International Labor Day in memory of Haymarket martyrs and the injustice of the Haymarket Affair. Today in almost every major industrial nation, May Day is Labor Day. Even Great Britain and Israel have passed legislation in recent years declaring this date a national holiday.

For years, half of the American Labor movement observed May 1 as Labor Day, while the other half observed the first Monday in September. After the Russian Revolution the May 1 date was mistakenly associated with communism...

So not withstanding the fact that this holiday (Labor Day) is only celebrated by Americans, it still possess a character which is international in outlook. That is how I conceive it.

The Labor Movement has shed blood so that a modicum of dignity and decency should be part of everyone's life.

And that is very much worth taking a moment to remember.

... What point in history? At what point did households need only 1 earner? I'm not disagreeing with you, just asking for some dates here since you're being quite vague.

Probably referring to the time where practically 50% of the adult population was on welfare (women). Not to mention that on the edge of starving to death is "enough to pay for everyone".

The welfare state is about as large as it's ever been in the West.

Prior to the 20th century the household head could make enough money to feed his family. You had to be literally retarded to not find work before the 20th century. A lowly peasant under the feudal system was fully employed, fully housed, and could actually raise a family. Same with a lowly factory worker in the early industrial revolution.
