When creating games that use cards, sometimes I like to set it so that during the game you don't recive any pieces of the cards, but everyone starts with enough pieces of card, so that everyone has x cards, this way cards are the same for everyone, which I see as fairer than the current system of having to attack to get a piece of card, which might be a piece of card that isn't as useful.

Does anyone else use these settings? And those who don't, have you tried it?

I don't see what is unfair about having to conquer a territory in order to earn card pieces. The only way you could argue it as being unfair is if the card pieces are unweighted but the issue there is the weighting and not the capturing rule.

Unweighted cards just makes the game into a lottery.

which I see as fairer than the current system of having to attack to get a piece of card, which might be a piece of card that isn't as useful.

This is only a problem if the cards aren't always the same (and in strategic templates, there is no luck in cards - each card piece is accounted for by the number of card pieces required for each turn.)

I haven't seen much of it myself, but I have done something similar - make a card have so many card pieces that it's impossible to get it done from scratch, but give them enough card pieces that they can complete one card in 5-10 turns.

Oh ok, so more people do this than I thoguht, it's just that I never see people doing this in open games.
