I'm not usually one to start a flame war, but I wanted to let people know that I was playing in a game with sturn and Rommel779, and five days in when I was clearly dominating and about to win on the next move, they joined together and booted me while I was in the middle of playing my turn (I had set the vote-boot time to 15 minutes and single-boot time to 1 day, assuming nobody would take advantage of it--they voted to boot me on minute 15.) It wasn't as if I was holding up the game or anything, it was just a last-second move to try to save a loss.

http://www.warlight.net/App.aspx?GameID=1021582 if anyone cares.

9:17:59 sturn: i voted
9:18:05 sturn: he is going to be real pissed
9:18:37 mindloss: yeah he is
9:19:33 mindloss: why would you do that?
9:20:32 sturn: because the rules allow it...you knew the rules when you signed up?

He's right, of course, it wasn't cheating (he was also right about me being pissed)... but anyway, if you want to play a good game, I'd steer clear of these two. I've been really enjoying Warlight, but this kind of shits on my experience.

I understand you being upset, and it wasn't an attempt to be poor sportsmen. It was basically that our game, which was supposed to be a quick one, was taking FOREVER. Granted, not all of that was you, but we'd already had to boot other people from it. As you said, it had already taken 5 days to complete, which is ridiculous for a quick game with a 15 minute boot time.

If you're mad, I understand. If you can put it aside, let's just keep playing our games on here and have fun.

Mindloss,

I understand that you are mad that you got booted. I have been booted from games where I was obviously winning and didn't play for 5 minutes and 5 seconds when the limit was 5 minutes. Does it suck? Yes it does...but you set the rules to the game so that all people can play with their preference. This game had been going on for days and we were tired of wating to play. Of course it sucks you were booted when you were obviously winning...but warlight gives you the opportunity to set the time limit. I play spades online at yahoo sometimes and if you dont play your turn for 5 minutes...it is automatic that someone at the table will boot you and you lose. Next time read the rules of the table you are in...in this case the rules you created....and know your limits. My guess is that you should not make a 15 minute per turn vote to end rule if you are not sitting at your computer all day to play it!

Automated AI turns in place of booting would fix this. <PING>

That's pretty lame. He was going to win and you booted him and your excuse is "Because we could?" Really don't understand the thinking there. Poor sportsmanship indeed.

Agreed -- that denial of it being unsportsmanlike was hypocritical BS.

The whole idea of having a vote to boot and a direct boot is deceptive. In a 1x1 whichever is lower controls. In a 2x2, if one player is killed off the other team can exploit the vote option. In a huge game I can never get everyone to vote no matter how egregious the delay (Eiken -- asshole -- is delaying three weeks between his moves in an 8 and a 12 player game I'm in, they're on pace to end sometime in 2011). In a 3 player game -- it encourages the losing two players to collaborate and exploit it.

When you create a game you should just make them the same time period and avoid these awkward scenerios. Anything over 15 minutes and you can't finish in one sitting, anything under 12 hours and you're asking for people to miss a cut-off at some point.

I play yahoo spades as well and the constant booting, stalling and cheating are what ruins the games. Things have a tendency to fall to the lowest common denomenator such that the worst player's acts become the norm for all. The community here is a million times more cordial and respectful. Most people want a good game more than they want to win. Pray everyone does not play like a cut-throat, unsportsmanlike jerk.

Well, if they were using it only to win, thats poor sportsmanship. BUT, I will admit that in the past, someone was at 2 days with a 12hr boot time. I was losing badly, but it was tournament play and to move it along I booted. I understand the anger toward boots, but when you start a game you should understand and move before the boot time.

And, you may think im an ass, but in the same tournament another team (under a 12 hr direct boot) took 4 days to take their first move. Others were complaining, so I booted them. Then another 3 days later they complained. Im sorry but a 7 day delay on a 12 hr boot game is completely unacceptable.

And I would expect nothing less if I missed a boot time. I dont care about the game situation, I could be 1 turn from winning, but if im holding the game up I deserve to be booted.

My personal rule is 3 hrs over the limit is beyond fair game

And on the same note, I will even boot my own teammates if they are holding up a game. Ask ahmad-al falas(spelling?). Though I give teammates a lot more budge, Im willing to boot a teammate whos holding up a game.

"Well, if they were using it only to win, thats poor sportsmanship. BUT"

They were using it only to win. Look at the history. Mindloss had just played 15 minutes before, they were just waiting til the timer ran out to kick him because they were going to lose. Typical behavior from assholes on this site. I've just tried multi player recently, and this is rampant. Too bad, it's a good game, but I'm about done with it because of pricks like this.

To be fair, I should add that I've since talked to Rommel, and even though I still don't agree with their move in that game, he at least seems like a reasonable guy. So, no hard feelings there.

"Guderian, why you mad? "

Poor sportsmanship pisses me off and makes the game less attractive to players, meaning there's less chance it will thrive and succeed. I like the game, thus I want more good people to play it, and less people that are pricks. Not saying you're a prick... Oh wait, yes I am. Based on that game log, you're a jerk. Maybe you're not all the time, but that's all I have to go on. And yes, I read your excuse, it was bullshit.

Guderian,

I'm sorry to hear you're unhappy with some people but the beauty of this game is that you don't have to join games with those people. You can choose to avoid those few players and you can play with people who think past the game.

Yeah, those people will boot others for a win but they lose in the long run by losing good people to play with and if they continue their ways, no one will want to play with them. Just look at the player PrivateParts, he was very rude and disrespectful to others and now he has very few people that are able to tolerate him and his Warlight experience has been ruined (I just looked at the game and saw he was in the game...how ironic). Also just recently there is a player by the name of General that is creating games with a 1 min boot time and he boots the second you go over that time. Do you think many other players are going to play with him next time? Probably not because thats a dick move to get a stat rather than actually play the game. After playing for quite awhile you will find a good group of people to play with and it becomes an awesome game.

Rommel & Sturn - I've been in your guys' position before and yeah, that was a dick move. He was one move away from eliminating you guys and he was actually there actively playing. I could see a difference in this situation if he was no where to be found and if he took more than 25 min or 30 min. Usually (in my mind) those low boot times just mean, "Hey I want this to be a fast game so please take your turn as fast as possible and if you have to take extra long for a certain turn, just let me know". Either way, I'm sure the next time this comes up you guys could wait an extra 1 or 2 min....

These are just my thoughts on the subject

I'm surprised this is still going on. Mindloss & I have talked about it & everything's cool. I believe we've even played a few games since then. (I don't normally pay attention to the names when I'm playing.) Some people are taking this way too seriously, though. I've been booted from several games as I was about to win. Does it suck? Yes, but I move on. This is a game I play at work when I'm not busy. That's why I generally join or create games with quick boot times.

If this game is so important to people that they're upset over this 10 days later, I feel sorry for them that they don't have more in their lives. If not, let's have some fun and play this game.

Though there are some people that are a bit less than honorable in their actions here, I find that on the norm this community is quite solid. I'm in a larger game at the moment that had a 15 minute boot time, and one of the players ended up disappearing suddenly. We talked it over like mature adults and decided that none of us would lose anything by extending it to a multi-day game to keep the game balanced. The game is still going, and nobody has been booted. It just goes to show that the content of the game, not the win or loss at the end should be the most important factor. If you're having trouble with people being dishonorable, don't play games with them. Play stand-up guys like Ruthless, The Mighty Sandwich, The Impaller, and a huge host of other players who won't boot you just to win a game.

A thought which I'm sure has been discussed before, and I should probably go look in the Features forum, but I'm lazy...

It would be awfully nice to include a reputation feature, something akin to what conquerclub.com has (although I think three separate ratings is overkill.) That way it would be trivial to weed out habitual trolls.

Totally with you on that one, Mindloss! I can think of at least 3 names of people who would get HORRIBLE ratings. It would be nice to be able to avoid those people, or at least know who they are.
