Revival of 'Player vs world' event, volunteers?: 4/19/2014 08:09:19

Now that my WL career is over, I thought of new community events...

The player vs world event was first (and last) held in 2011, when a very good player, Impaller played a game with 'The world'. The idea was that 'The world' would vote on the best picks and moves every turn in a game against the impaller, with the most popular version of moves getting executed, a bit like vote chess for those who don't know. For more details on last event see (http://warlight.net/Forum/Thread?ThreadID=1333)

There have been a few attempts to revive this event over the years, with little success. But now, with a bigger community than ever, I think we can do it.

So what we need...

#1: 'The player'. He would be honor bound not to check the voting threads. Obviously he would also have to be very good and have proven his skill with ladder success.

#2: A panel of several good players would also be selected, preferably 7, they would give their ideas on the best picks and moves every turn and then everybody would get to vote on which option they like best, we can do this through pollcode or poll.com.

#3: A medium account to be the representative of the world. A shared new account between the panel would be preferable so that the panel may be able to view the game easier and make better choices, and in the event that the representative leaves, the event can continue. However, due to incidents of new accounts lagging, this may not work.

#4: Choosing a template. 1v1 Strat is probably best, though with 0% luck to minimise confusion.

Pre-reqs to become chosen...

The player
- #1 1v1 ladder
- #1 2v2 ladder
- Min 2k games

The Panel
- #1 on any ladder
- Min 1k games

Would anyone be interested to do this? If you are interested please comment or mail me. If you dont meet the pre-reqs, you can join the waiting list, and you may be selected if there are not enough eligible players for the panel. If you have any suggestions or questions, comment too! Lets hope this works! :)

Nice idea and revival, shame I can't participate. Also this time it's very hard for the player, because the panel wil be very good.

I think it's a great idea although I disagree with your number 1 on any ladder prerequisite for the panel, I think you should change it to top 3 in any ladder because there are number 2 and 3 players that would surely have got number 1 in a different time.

Also I agree with Apollo, I don't think the player has much of a chance at all - I mean if I remember correctly The Impaller lost and 'the world' was a much smaller handful of players back then.

Not that I can join or anything, but as a side note, the Panel could just use the mail feature to discuss moves or if applicable, an alternative out-of-system chat like skype

Just gets rid of needing the honour system but then no one gets to see their strategy.

I thinkk you guys miunderstood the post. EVERYONE on Warlight gets to participate. The panel is simply choosing the best options for everyone to vote on. Obviously we can't have 30 people voicing out 30 different opinions, so a few good player suggesting a few good ideas, then everyone votes on the most popular.'The player' may very well have a good chance actually, as in the end it could very well be that the most popular choice is not the best choice.

And I was hoping that the panel would each give out their idea without discussion. That way the suggestion is uninfluenced and straight from their own judgement.

I'm still looking for volunteers... if anyone's interested...

With such a big community, I doubt that one player (solo) will be able to defeat the world, though a major part of it is the solo player's style of play being second nature to some great players and thus they'll know how to counter it, whilst the solo player doesn't have a sense of who the "world" is.

I guess you could counter it by keeping the player's name a secret (Use an alt), and in that case we simply know it's a player who met your pre-reqs, but we don't know who, so we can't counter their packs solely based on how they usually play (We'll probably figure it out sometime during play, though, which might mean we'll try to counter their play later on).

Alternately, it would also be really interesting if you got a clan to be the "player". We might know how each individual player plays in the clan, but how do they work as a team? (There's no clan that had all of its players meet the criterion, but all of the top-tier clans have at least one)

I sincerely believe you are mistaken Riyamitie, more players does not mean better choices, I'd argue I'd have much more trouble playing with one top player than against several trying to decide on one strategy. Last time in Impaller vs the World the game was really played technically bad by The World out of a huge advantage on turn 1 (remember when we had starts of 5 instead of 4?).

#3

Last time the account used was Fizzer himself, and with screenspics to show the board. I didn't play wl then, but imo this seems like the best way to organize things (if Fizzer are in ofc, if not we'd have to use another one). A shared account would easly be trolled/missused. Also the voting system used last time is also the best I think.

Edit: I'd also like to be on the panel, don't meet the requrierments though

I would suggest Dead Piggy to be the champ. Not sure if he has taken #1 on two ladders but imo he is currently the best Strategic 1v1 player by a long shot.

@TWM and Hennns, priority will be given to those that have #1, but if we fail to find enough people (most likely), I'll put you guys in, since you guys have good ladder performances too.

@Arun: I have a few names in mind, and i'll see if any approaches this thread and signs up to be 'the player', if not i'll ask around.

@sze, gnuff: you want to be part of the panel? we probably need some good players to attract more attention for this event if its going to run.

I cant be trusted not to look at the thread where the world discusses its strategies, so unfortunately I will only be able to offer my services to "the world" team. My first recommendation is change the name of the team to "team piggy".

"best Strategic 1v1 player by a long shot

Im certainly the loudest.

At this rate there's going to be no one playing the world. Two of the five people I thought would make good champions have already implied they aren't going to do it... (Although I guess Sze didn't meet the requirements anyway..)

UPDATE.

Mannerheim/Odin of the |GG| clan has consented to be 'The player'. His #1 on the 1v1 ladder, his 2 month reign on the 2v2 ladder with Jupiter, his MVP performance on the clan league and his high standings on the last 20A tournament makes him a choice as good as any.

The Panel is still looking for players. I have sent out a few invitations also.

Templates are still being decided. I prefer 1v1 strategic but odin suggests new templates with more than 3 picks, thoughts?

To specify - I prefer:

1) a luck factor of 16% or smaller
2) more than 3 picks because there is more skill needed to make a larger amount of good picks, however I'm content with 3 picks if needed

Otherwise I'm open for anything, though I think the settings and map should not be too unconventional.
