Map Design 101?: 9/10/2012 14:05:39

Hey guys, I need some very basic advice from an experienced map maker. Here is my situation:

I don't know how many of you play the East Asia map, but it is one of my favorites. However, a few months ago, I started getting annoyed at the often inaccurate territory names. I asked Fizzer if I could adopt the map, not to make any gameplay changes, but merely to change the territory names. He and the previous creator agreed to my suggestion, so I am now listed as the creator of the East Asia map. My problem? I can't figure out how to edit the map, as I never created it and don't have any files. How do I edit a map that was never on my computer, even though I am technically the "creator"?

This is the first of many questions I will have about this, as I am completely new to any form of map-making.

Thanks for any help!

Multiplayer tab > design maps > Manage this map > click most recent version > Change selected version mode (into development) > Edit selected version > Download stored SVG

This should work

If you'v never ever made a map, first go here: http://wiki.warlight.net/index.php/Uploading_your_SVG and then click the link. I don't know if this is necesary or not.

Additionally, if all you are interested in doing is changing territory names, there is no need to download the SVG. The naming is done once the SVG has been uploaded to Warlight so everything can be done from your browser window with no additional software required.

I don't have this "design map" option on my Multiplayer tab.

You have to enable it.

http://warlight.net/EnableMapDevelopment.aspx

If you're just changing territory names, you should be fine without an SVG Editor.

If you're chaning bonus names, you'll need to have an SVG Editor (Inkscape).

To change a bonus name, you need to both change the object properties for the bonus link and in the warlight editor, you need to change the bonus name.

Thanks for the help guys, it seems to be working, at least for what I want to do. Essentially, I want to rename most, if not all, of the territory names in China.

Does anyone know enough about the rest of the places on the East Asia map to know if the system used to name the territories make sense? I know they don't for the Chinese territories, so I will change them, and any others that are brought to my attention.

I don't know about the rest of Asia, but in the Philippines, "Mindaro" is supposed to be "Mindoro" and "Palawon" is "Palawan."

Thanks for all the help, I am busy re-doing the Chinese place names. Thanks for any input on non-Chinese place names. One question: When doing places that are officially part of China, such as Tibet or Inner Mongolia, should place names be in Tibetan or Mongolian? Or should I go with the "official" place names?

You might want to go with the "official names" so all of the naming is uniform.
