Hey guys, I am asking for some help from the community. I am currently in charge of redoing the East Asia map. Don't worry, the only changes I am making involve territory (and possibly bonus) names. Essentially, I want to make them more accurate, as I know many of the names in the Chinese bonuses are wrong. I just have a few questions for forum people.

1. There are some provinces in China that are not ethnically Chinese. Xinjiang (in the Northwest), Inner Mongolia (in the North), and Xijian (Tibet in the Southwest). Should the territories in these bonuses be named according to the official Chinese names, or should I use the "native" territory names?

2. Someone has already alerted me to two territories in the Philippines (Mindaro and Palawon should be Mindoro and Palawan). I don't know much about the rest of these East Asian countries, but are there any other areas that need changes? For example, are the Korean territory names correct? How about the Vietnamese?

I will probably bump this if it is knocked off the front page by threads about brownies, religion, or clan recruitment.

South Gyeongsang should be South Chungcheong.

1. Since they are all part of the PRC they should have the official chinese names. But to take their special status into account, you should add the native names, giving them effectively two names.

Hmmm, I see your point about using the official PRC names, at least for those. As far as giving them dual names, I would rather not. One of my motivations for doing this is that the old territory names were often too cluttered. Things such as extremely long literal translations, and territories with the names of two cities (in those cases, I try to just name it for whatever is the larger of the two). Basically, my goal is to make the territory names much shorter and easier to use (in terms of chatting with teammates), as well as have a uniform system for naming territories, rather than the current hodgepodge. I would like to state that I AM DOING NOTHING AT ALL TO CHANGE THE AESTHETICS OR GAMEPLAY OF THE MAP, merely changing the names of certain territories.

I have recently decided that I am going to go ahead and take a look at the whole map, rather than just China. It will take a bit of extra time, but that is something I have got plenty of at the moment.

My plan is to give the Chinese territories the names of Chinese cities, as that is a common administrative region throughout China. As for the bonuses that encompass entire countries, my plan is to name them based on a provincial/prefecture level.

Any thoughts on this? All constructive help or ideas are welcomed.

In terms of chatting with teammates, use strg+click instead of writing out ;)

This is a great idea - there are a lot of maps that could use a cleanup like this. I'll just point out two problems with Hong Kong: the name of the bonus should be two words and it should be Lantau, not Lantou. (If you're going to shorten names I'd go with "Lantau" and "Kowloon" but keep "Hong Kong Island.")

My main focus was on China, because the current system for naming the territories in China was...nonexistent.

For places like Hong Kong, I feel that Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong Island, and LantAu Island are the accepted names, what people call that place when referring to it. I mostly had a problem with places being named simply wrong. Most of the countries were named according to administrative region (I think most are by province or prefecture), but I think not enough care was taken to name the Chinese territories.

I am considering renaming the Chinese bonuses themselves, as Shaanxi is called Simxi, which is flat wrong, and others are written as GuangXi, instead of Guangxi (as is typical). However, I don't know how much work this would entail, in terms of redoing bonus values for each individual territory.

There are two Haryanas in North India - the southern one looks like it's actually part of Madhya Pradesh.

I was just scanning other countries to see if there were any other strange territory names, and I ran across a few territories in Cambodia, Svay Rieng Prey Veng, Kampot Sihanoukville, and Takeo Kandal, that looked pretty long. Upon a little digging, I see that they are actually combinations, where the original author combined the name of two provinces into one Warlight territory.

What should I do about this? Is there one that is more important than the other?

Caio,

I know the Beijing bonus is all kinds of screwy. For starters, there isn't one! The small 1 bonus is named Tianjin, while Beijing is just a territory in the Hebei province. I would like to name the small bonus Beijing, as I think it is more suitable to have Beijing as a separate bonus, rather than Tianjin.

Two problems:

1) I have no map-making experience. Thus, changing much more than the territory names is going to be a difficult task for me. As far as I can determine, changing bonus names is a much more involved process than changing territory names.

2) When I was given permission to "adopt" the map, I assured Fizzer that I would be changing nothing in terms of gameplay. I don't know how much messing with those bonuses up there would be considered acceptable.
