How significant are win rates? (discussion): 9/23/2012 00:52:40

I think it depends on the person, some people (whose names and clan i will not mention =P) create cheating games over and over to farm wins and increase their stats, or else only play maps they do super well in. i've beaten someone with over 1k 1V1 games and a 97% win rate very easily. Some people also use the "open seat reqs" to make sure they only play noobs. On the other hand i usually play anyone who beats me over and over to try to improve, which lowers my win rate.

The global win rate also varies depends on the number and size of ffas you do, for example in all 2 player/team games i have over 50% win rate, but overall i have about 40% because i do a lot of ffas.

I'm not sure how they're counted, but i've also done quite a significant amount of 2V1s and 3-4v2s or larger versions of those on balanced maps, so i get a relatively low win rate, but its very satisfying when i do win.

On the other hand some people play normally and get a 30% win rate in 2 player/team games, so its significant, even though it only gives a limited view of things, and the only way to know for sure is to play.

*when i say "i" it's an example, all those things probably apply to a lot of people

So, what do you think? :)

Win rates might give you a basic idea of a player but not a very good estimate. Belzebu has 98% 1v1 win rate and has played 6000 games because his favorite map has weird bonuses and so he nearly always wins at it. I have a 55% win rate because I lost so many games when I was not as good. If I made a new account and joined just autogames I would have over a 90% win rate, as some people do. A lot of it is the competition and the settings. I would say usually if it's below 40% you can expect them to be a bad player though.

Games with uneven teams don't count towards your win% at all. They're practice games by default. You still might want to avoid getting booted in those though...

B-b-b-b-but it's not faaaaaaaaaaair! When i beat 2 players at once i want recognition! =p

i completely agree with jsa btw, i found a map myself where i can't lose (its stadium) cuz i found the ultimate strategy. if anyone cares to try me go ahead! =)
i only did like 5 games on it once i found that strategy tho, then it got boring ^^

a high 1v1 win rate does not mean to a player can pick and choose his opponents in the auto games and acquire a large win rate.

but i think a higher win rate in 2v2's and 3v3 shows more than people would expect it a player is getting this percentage with randoms it shows that he has good teamwork and sometimes leader ship or it could show he simply plays with his clan members alot and stacks the deck

so from and outward glance if you don't know the person it does not tell you much. but sometimes can give you the ability to guess weather a player is good or bad just by the amount of games played. what was that i heard in another thread
"experience trumps ... something or other" whatever it was it was very empowering.

Regardless of what people say, there is a strong correlation between skill and your win rate.

Yeah, my 3v3 rate got destroyed from a player that was inactive in a round robin tournament. We played all but one game 2v3, and against good players too. I don't care enough about it to do like jsa mentioned and make a 2nd account. I would take more pride in having a decent rate knowing I am on my 1st and only account.

I think it gives you some idea, but not the whole picture. I usually look at the single player turns as well. If someone can't beat the first challenge in 6 turns they simply aren't good. All you have to do is some simple math to figure out where to attack first on that one. There is almost no luck involved and even if you get hosed on a roll you can redo it a couple times and win it.

Mostly it just comes from playing together to see if they are good.

i don't do single player for stars, i did up to crazy challenge to learn to play (europe challenge was the one i learned the most from, but it made me hate that map), and i just got frustrated with insane, it takes too long. i never really lost on it, but i usually ragequit and don't feel like continuing.
All of the turns i got were my first time, except for levels 1 and 2 that i did on kongregate where i found the game.

^I agree. The other ones are largely based on luck (being able to get the star), and I find it too boring to try over and over. Now if it had %0 luck I might.

But if you can't beat the first one in 6 turns it tells me you are not thinking very hard at all.

Hehe....look at MY win rates/stats...they are horrible, no? But, that's only because I always join other people's games instead of hiding behind the games I make to boost my win rate. I'm here to have a good time and be well known for win a good teammate and being friendly, not to be a guy who has good stats and is a jerk to everyone. Stats don't matter too much to me in my field, however I try hard to win games all the same :)

Anyway, I have no map to call my best, I am a jack-of-all-trades as I used to be and as I am. I play 4 different instruments, and the only one I am extremely good at is the Piano, which I have continued all the way until my senior year in High School (about 17 years).

My point is I don't become good at something until I have repetitively done it. Maps that I am good at are Europe (all except 1600 AD) and Asia. I consider myself good on Germany Big, but I still need practice on it.

I believe win rates ARE significant in determining skill if they play FAIRLY (you know what I mean). Many people don't play fair in this game, so the win rate's significance has been nerfed. My win rate is 44/148 which is almost 30%, which improved over the summer from 20% in June.
I have a new question: What do you believe is a GOOD overall win rate, and what category is the most accurate in determining skill?
Though I have never played duels, I think 1v1s are the most accurate. 3v3s may be good in measuring how good a team player you are (mine is exactly half). For overall, I think 90+% is unrealistic if played fairly, and somewhere around 2/3 overall win rate determines mastery (if played fairly, of course).

Yes, I think 60% win rate it's probably the best....or 80% is excellent. Over 90% is ridiculous, but probably only 50 games played equals 90% win rate.

Most of the best players have win rates in the 70% range on 1v1...Zoso, sze, etc.

Some though, like Ace Windu are below 60%...I am much better than most 55% players but it completely depends on the person...But I have never met a good plaeyr with a 1v1 win rate below 50%.

That's the advantage fo the ladder's, there you can't choose the best settings possible. Someone in the top 60/70 is an avarage-good player, someone in the top 30 is someone you should respect, someone in the top 10 should be a bit scary

i have 68% on 1v1 but i'm an appalling player... mostly stats dont matter...
and really jsa, my clan has got a few guys who has under 50% on 1v1, but i'm certain, they'll have no trouble beating you and most of the 'solid players' in your clan
