Strategy is learned from mistakes and other people's mistakes. Of course, it's more convenient to watch and learn from other people's mistakes than go through them yourself. At some point in the expert/pro levels, the variance comes in deciding to take a risk which the opponent wouldn't expect. I would say that this game is still forming ideas though, and that the top 10 of the ladder all have different playing styles.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is: Yeah, there's a lot of copying going on, but the better original ideas typically win out.
