For me:

(1) Europe

Troll's is best. Issander's can be fun, but finding all the little 1 bonuses isn't easy. They aren't especially visible and searching for them is annoying. Ottaman's is great if you minimize the superbonuses; but I don't like version 1.1's appearance. Even though a lot of my ideas were used to make Major Risks' maps, I can't stand the two maps. Troll wouldn't let Major Risk publish a smaller, improved version of Europe ("Europe 2.0"), so it forced Major Risk to make much larger maps, which have the same bonus value system but across too much space. Every time I played the maps it felt like I was being punished. Maps that favor lots of clicking and spawning without too much strategic thought should be classified as a form of torture.

(2) Earth

I love the Small Earth map if playing Risk, but not on Warlight. Grundie's Earth map is annoying, especially in South America and Antarctica. Heavy Earth is a bit similar in that respect (too many damn territories in certain areas). Fizzer's "Modified" map is my favorite in this group.

(3) Roman Empire

Incaman's is the best example of cartography on Warlight. But it isn't as strategic as Vampire's. The bonus values of Incaman's are all the same. And for a map that size, it just becomes a big, messy game of growth. Vampire's is nice because of its smaller size, more strategic choke points, and more varied bonus values and sizes (which makes picking strategies part of the fun). Maps like Incaman's are annoying when picking. I prefer autodistribute for such maps, to avoid the pain of being forced to talk about and coordinate picks that don't really matter.

(4) Asia

I really like Texas John's map, though in real-time it can become a clicking race, given its size: whoever can click the fastest to get their turns in before the 5 minute real-time boot wins - or at least sometimes you feel this pressure, which takes away from the fun. But for multi-day games Texas' map is great. I have only played my Medium East Asia map once, but it was fun. I tried to make it a smaller, simpler version of Texas John's map, with strategic differences, so playing it would feel different from playing Texas John's. The China map has provided me with the most enjoyable games. My Asia map is ok, but is a bit dull in comparison to the first three: after playing the China map maybe 5 games in a row with Gnuff, Sze, Gangbang and a few others, we played a game on my Asia map and I was immediately disappointed by the change of pace. Eitz's map is great for 1v1s. I've never played Caio's map, because it's so big and has an odd appearance (like a misshapen fruit). I can't imagine how that could lead to short, sweet, strategic games, and think it'd instead lead to nasty, brutish, and long drawn-out games.

(5) Chaos' Fictional Islands

For his Battle Islands series, I like V most. It looks most realistic and it requires the most interesting strategies and tactics. I also enjoy his 4 Kingdoms map (http://warlight.net/Map?ID=2899). The idea of competing kingdoms with more or less equal bonuses and equal access to each other is something that could be built upon.

(6) Big World

Caio's can be fun, but it is hard to play in real-time. It requires a lot of time clicking in orders. World Big isn't the most well made map. But if its appearance were cleaned up, it would be my favorite among this group of maps.

I think you can't compare most of these maps, as some are better for 1v1 while others for multi-player, but some general thoughts:

1) Troll's europe map has excellent game-play but is ugly as hell. What would be great is an exact replica, but with nice design. Borders are unclear, too much overlapping etc... Can't believe it's ranked #1 but I guess most players ranked it before the big map-boom and don't bother changing their votes now.

2) Fizzer's ME, because it combing so many interesting gaming aspects and is well designed. Over-played, yes, but still one of the best maps out there for 1v1.

3) Inca's is more strategic and better balanced, but design of Rise of Rome deserve to be mentioned too.

4) I haven't played those maps enough to have much to say. From the looks I'd give the Chameleon China map my vote, because it adds interesting elements other maps don't have.

5) Though call ;) For 3v3 or FFA, both Battle Island 3 & 4 are really good, but too big for 1v1. BI-1 was designed for 4 player FFA mainly and BI-2 for 4v4 (but 4v4 is just boring and slow imho) BI-5 is great for strategic 1v1 kind of games and is a nice alternative to Medium Earth. The new Phobia map (http://warlight.net/Map?ID=8035) plays really well so far, yet still new so I doubt anybody can have an objective opinion already. 4 kingdoms is much better with the new design and offer fast and aggressive games usually.

6) never played any of those yet.

1) Troll's Europe will always be the best, in my opinion. It's the only Europe map I like playing on. Issander's Europe map is my least favorite, however. It just makes me gag every time I look at it.

2) Medium Earth is a great map (I used to hate it....for some reason). However, it's EXTREMELY overplayed. Small Earth and Earth both suffer the same problem: balance issues. Heavy Earth is the newest earth map, and so far, my favorite. My only objection with it is that there are too many 2 army bonuses. But aside from that, it's a great map.

3) I really like Vampire's Imperium Romanum. Just not on Guiroma settings. Rise of Rome is a little bit ugly, honestly.

4) East Asia is really large, and I don't like large maps. The bonuses on Caio's Asia map drive me nuts. But Gui's China map is interesting. It plays somewhat like a 2v2 on Europe. That one's my favorite.

5) Battle Islands 4 has a great design, and could be an interesting 3v3 map. Battle Islands 3 is also a great map, though I like 4 better. But Battle Islands 5....I dunno...I just don't like it that much. Maybe because of Season 5 (My least favorite Season)?

6) Pedrito's World big is incredible. While it's large enough for 24 FFAs, it's small enough so that games don't take forever, a problem with Caio's Big World Map. But, Big World Map is very useful for games like Spheres of Influence.

1) Troll's Europe:

Chaos - That map is ugly as hell and confusing? Really?

2) Fizzer's Med. Earth with Modified East Russia

3) Imperium Romanum

Rise of Rome might be a decent map for semi-competetive 4vs4 games and we lacked a map like that. Unfortunately not many good players have played it yet.

4) The Chameleon's China

5) Haven't played all of them yet

6) I loathe Big World... Probably like all oversized maps.

@ szeweningen : as soon as you zoom it's clearly a badly drawn map. Some connections are unclear such as the ones from Eszak-Magyarorszag. You played it a lot so you probably know all by heart and it's less of an issue.
For the top ranked map this is, as a map maker, hard to accept. I like the game-play though.

Sorry for going slightly offtopic..
Partially inspired by this thread, and partially because i'm bored with the maps we've got I've recently started my attempt in mapmaking - I want to make an alternative to Troll's strategic europe map. Yes, It's true his map was poorly drawn, yet still in my opinion it is the best map on Warlight. I don't believe mine would be able to directly compete with his, especially because it is my very first map, but i'll do my best and as soon as I will finish the core, I hope to get some of the top players to test it and make it as playable and balanced as possible.. At least I am sure it will be better looking than Troll's ;)

PS: Gui - what to you mean by "Troll wouldn't let Major Risk publish a smaller, improved version of Europe" - Is he in charge of which maps get published and which are not? I'm curious, because while my map has a bit different everything really, in the end many regions are going to look similar, because like Troll, I am also dividing territories based on political maps and the size of the map is obviously similar as well..

I read the conversation between Troll and Major Risk and was talking to Risk throughout the creative process. The first map Risk made was the same size as Troll's. Everything was the same: bonuses, colors, names, etc., except for the minor but significant changes Risk made to make an improved map (maybe a few territories changed, bonus values adjusted). Troll didn't like it. He didn't think it was original enough. And since Troll is Fizzer's friend in real life (apparently), he seems to have told Fizzer not to accept the new map when Risk submitted it for public use. Not until Troll gave Fizzer the green light did Risk's maps get accepted, and that was only after about 3-4 series of changes to make the new maps more original and less like Troll's. So if you make a map similar to Troll's you might want to make it different enough in some way. Otherwise you'll be wasting your time.

Yes, Gui is correct, if you are going to make another europe, you will have to make it different by a considerable margin - it is a lot of work and hassle to completely revamp a map. Troll (as anyone) disliked the plagiarized version, which I basically duplicated from the original, and made a number of aesthetical and tactical changes, with much input from Gui and other regular forum users. (I'm very grateful for that). I would have liked to see if my "improvements" were in fact really improvements but to be fair to Troll, it is his decision if he wants to accept the "copied" map or not but if it is significantly different, like other europe maps, it should be allowed no problem. I simply tried to address certain imbalances in the classic europe map. The map could have been released 2-3 weeks earlier if I hadn't had this setback.

Obviously there are no, "rights" as such on the political locations and regions inside Europe but just don't base it on Troll's map without asking; he may be less enthusiastic to help out if his map is copied another time without permission, and a piece of advice - start a thread on your map, many creative brains are usually better than just 1, the forum community gives good advice, you can always chose to listen to it or not!

And Gui, I'm sorry to hear your disappointed review of the Alternative Europe maps, I was concerned it may be too big for anything less than 4v4, but I guess we can't win on everything, at least it is published finally I guess. ;)
