Math wolf: I hope your reply is a joke, if not it is necessarily cruel, not to mention unrepresentative of Skunk's work. Anyone who puts time and effort into adding content or otherwise improving this game for us for free deserves recognition and praise even if what they are doing is not top flight. In this specific case with regard to the work that Skunk produced, you cannot even say that it is lacking in quality. Granted his early work required improvement, but over the last couple of years you can see that Skunk has put a lot of effort in and learned a lot and has been producing some really terrific maps! If it was not a joke, I should say that you owe him an apology, how you could say something so disheartening is beyond me!

Skunk: Congratulations, and thank you, in the short time I've been playing Warlight I have played on several of your maps: Solar system, USSR, Europe 2050, and UK being particularly praiseworthy. Cheers dude!

@NostanceTD (and others that may be insulted by my comment): I do respect the work skunk puts into it, as much I do respect the work that all other mapmakers put into their maps. I personally feel I have generally more respect for people who make great maps than I have for great players.

My comment is refering to skunk's recurring need to show everyone how many maps he made. As we say in Dutch: "own praise stinks". If you congratulate skunk with this feat in a topic he found necessary to make himself, why not congratulate all other mapmakers who are less egocentric as well? Each of them deserves our praise, but most are not openly solliciting for it regularly. (The map of the week initiative by Apollo is great for this by the way. If you feel a mapmaker should get acknowledged for his work, make sure to nominate a map there.) Also, if we'd rank mapmakers rather by the time and effort they put in their maps, which can sadly enough not be easily measured, maybe some others would end up on top.

Additionally though, with the amount of maps that WL has already by now (and the time it takes to search for certain maps when you don't have a template ready), I personally feel we have moved past the point where it may be better to have less new maps of outstanding quality rather than many average maps. A race to have the most maps and a sense of entitlement purely on quantity both do not improve quality and may actually reduce it. (I really like how NinjaNic acknowledges this!) On the other hand, I do think WL itself should never discourage people from making maps. Everyone is of course free to disagree with me on all that. This discussion is however rather off-topic though and may be better discussed elsewhere instead.

People generally improve over time and in a more or less linear manner, and some people will begin from a point of greater success than others, needless to say that for us to experience the best maps, the people that make them will probably turn out a number of sub-standard or mediocre maps in the process. This is not always true of course, in any industry there will be those who seem to hit the nail on the head with every endeavour.

Are we really saying that only good maps should be published? If so then how will they be judged pre-publish? And by whom? And wouldn't having their first map rejected from receiving any public attention at all have put off a number of map makers who have gone on to produce some fine maps?

Maybe the answer is to have a small group of people who make official maps for WarLight (for no pay) and refuse public submissions altogether, but that would surely lead to a stifling of creativity.

In this specific case I don't think that any of you could say that Skunk has deliberately produced poorly made maps in a rushed manner just to claim this accolade. I understand resentment towards someone who "blows his own trumpet" but that doesn't give anyone the right to insult the work he has genuinely put in. That is quite a separate issue.

We say so in germany, too. Although I dont really care, if someone urgently needs to appeal his ego by fishing for compliments and praise.

What is wrong about good maps or only good maps? This forum is a good start to get in touch with some experienced map creators, who are able and willing to offer some help with the current map project. as everyone needs of course some time to improve his capabilities. But you are right, it is hard to realize this idea. although the whole thing havent been part of the discussion so far. By the way this quote implies that you agree with the mentioned lack of quality within most or some of skunks maps.

I understand resentment towards someone who "blows his own trumpet" but that doesn't give anyone the right to insult the work he has genuinely put in.

How could someone literally insult the work someone has put into something? Those are reasoned criticisms. They havent been insulting or polemic in any case. everyone should be free to mention its opinion even if it is unfavourable.

You're right Ranek: although I don't think that Math Wolf's first comment in this thread could be described as a reasoned criticism, he has since clarified his position, and the closing paragraph of my last comment has served only to continue this prosaic discussion; I apologise.

I think that if it is timely to have a full dialogue on the merits of the current map submission system, and raise ideas for a new one, that we would be best served starting a new thread (as Math Wolf previously suggested), and that this thread should return to the recognition of the time and effort one of our own has put into the community.

Blame the system not the map makers, we do need only good maps to be published soon. I guess a group of experienced map makers could be admins and vote on whether a map gets published or not. The amount of bad maps are building.

I agree with Math Wolf. Quality is more important (I could easily churn out 50 maps but would anyone play them?). That is not to say skunk makes bad maps, but it is also true in general that promoting quantity is dangerous. Self promotion is also not very flattering.

I disagree with Apollo's idea. One of Warlight's main selling points is that anyone and everyone can make maps to do with anything and anywhere they want. As soon as you add a system where maps are rejected for 'peoples opinion on quality' then you take away that selling point.

I agree. Only Fizzer should reject something. I have made a few maps that I think are pretty good, yet people score them bad because maybe they don't play that type of game. Unless Fizzer has issues with storage, why change the system?

If anything, just remove maps that are never played. I'm sure there are some that have gone months or years without being used at all.
