Serious question, I've obviously played warlight a while, I know good players who won't get booted I can join in games or make them with good players. What does a clan do for somebody like me?

I never saw warlight as a game where you needed to join a clan, I'm still not convinced that you do. I can see there use for new players - though with a good enough community that shouldn't be true ... but I guess all the alts and trolls these days slow down people offering that advice ...

As an outsider clans seem to offer community and guaranteed partners in games + some competitions. All of which I feel I have access to already via people I know and the forums.

So I'd be interested in hearing a non partisan discussion about the worth of being in a clan?

Supposing you have a good network of friends, the pool of good teammates can be replicated outside a clan environment. Being in a good clan makes that easier, but it can be duplicated like I said.

Clans do offer more than just good teammates though. Clan mates are more likely to help you get better. You also have clan specific competitions, like the clan leagues. I think there is also extra non-game chatter in clans that is fun.

What would really boost the greatness of clans is an actual clan ladder and/or official competition from Fizzer.

Speaking from my own experiences here,

Before the LEA existed as a clan, we were a loose collection of 5v5 teams. And then things kind of exploded, and with more than 50 people participating we (Dr. Stupid, myself and others) decided it would be a lot easier to keep things organized by forming a clan. So in that sense, clans do help hold things together a bit if used correctly. It's a lot easier to see when someone changes their name, for example; I used to lose Warlight friends when one of us would change our username and suddenly disappear.

It all depends on what you're trying to get from clan life, to be honest. :)

I've never been the clan, I do not really understand what you're doing there or If it special? It does not cost money to join the clan, right?

No cost to join, but there is a cost ($15) to register the clan officially on warlight.

What's special about it? They have their own forum? Then they play together?

Did you read my first post in this thread? I mentioned what is different (beyond just playing with good players outside a clan). It is mostly the clan only events that people not in a clan miss out on. It is also nice to root for clan mates even when not playing with them. Like if lots of your clan mates are dominating a ladder, it is a sense of pride.

@elroi, http://warlight.net/Clans/Create That is all a clan gives you technically, but of course clan-mates play together etc. It varies from clan to clan whet extra they do.

Ska, I like to think that a clan gives you what you make of it. Additionally if you were to join a clan you'd still have good players who won't get booted I can join in games or make them with good players+ whatever the clan offers you (this I believe can vary by a lot).

Nobody has mentioned the reason clans were ever invented. The team dynamic is awesome, particularly with players you like. Having friends in an 'official' unit, and succeeding and playing together is something that can never be replicated. You get it in football teams, swim clubs, and here, in clans. The team dynamic is the main attraction of a clan to me.

Joining a clan is an expression of unending loyalty. It is similar to accepting a wedding ring as a token of your spouses loyalty and giving a wedding ring as a token of your own loyalty. And for those of us who join more than one clan... It is because we have so much loyalty and faithfulness to give, we could not possibly bestow it all upon only one clan. Kind of like old school Mormans.

Clans from my view as a large clan Leader is just for the sake of making the gaming experience more fun and organised, as in by abiding by a certain code of conduct when playing as in sticking to game rules and playing fairly etc, and if you don't you wont be in the clan and wont get invited to the games, its also a possibility to have clan vs clan things but these are limited.

So again in my view its just about improving game experience.
(I don't really do the whole 'for de empowarr' stuff haha)

Everything depends on things. If you want to play Clan League or other clan related competitions, you obviously need a clan. But if your only wish is to play games with players you know, you don't need one.

Also, not every clan is the same. Some clans are only a clan because they want people to play regular games with, some clans is there for the competitions and the fame, some for the 'inside clan competitions', some for the community and some for all/many of those, like Blitz. So as i said, it all depends.

Quitting a clan must be like divorce, then? Well, this puts an odd spin on people who clan hop.

You don't need to. Most of Warlight's features and competitions can be accessed whether or not you have a clan. This is especially true if you already have players to play with (as you mentioned.)

Personally, I view clans (official and unofficial) as like membership: It's an optional package that adds a few extra perks* to your Warlight experience. None of these things are, by far, necessary, but they are either fun to have as an extra or make processes easier. The perks of a clan are like how I expect game DLC to work: Without it, you can still get the full experience of a game; with it, you get a few extra things to work with.

*Pretty much all of these were mentioned between the first two posts, so I won't elaborate. One tiny note, though: Much of the benefits of clans seem to cater to the competitive side; most of the rest caters to communication and teamwork. Thus, the value of a clan varies depending on how much you value these two things, as well as how much of them you can get without clans.
