Why are Diplomacy Games so Popular?: 7/18/2013 13:31:05

Diplomacy games are games on insanely large maps, where each competitor is given a country. Naturally, these games are all large FFAs, which are fairly imbalanced. And that's not all, some countries (like Russia, China, USA) are significantly more powerful then others, only adding to the imbalance and making it nigh impossible for the smaller countries to win.

Diplomacy games also typically come with a set of rules, such as "you must declare war before attacking". Unfortunately, these rules are always broken by some ignorant fool who didn't read the rules, then the person who was attacked whines about being attacked on chat, but most people usually ignore him, meaning the cheater can take the attacked person's country, rewarding unfair play. Then, another player ignores the rules, and the cycle begins all over again.

Ugh. And as if that weren't bad enough, Diplomacy games are extremely popular among the novice community, and so you constantly have games with the title "PLEASE MEMBERS MAKE A DIPLO GAME!". Those games are obnoxious, and if I were a member, I would not accommodate the request. I believe that someone should do something about them, but what?

We like this because it is the closest to a real world scenario. Imbalanced? Yes, but in the real world it also is imbalanced. That the smaller nations to not have a change to win is a wrong statement. I've seen multiple games in wich smaller nations because superpowers and controlled big part of the game. Also, it are often the big nations (Russia, USA, China) that go down because multiple smaller nations work together with one other superpower and break him up.

This is indeed a problem, but there is a solution: Don't put your Diplo game in the open games. By now there are some players who have proven to know the rules and who know how to play a diplogame. Invite them, don't use any open seat. If you are out of those kind of players, then invite some players that are well known in WL (on the forums for example), they often know the rules.

This is indeed annoying and there already has been a thread about it. Fizzer has said that you can report them, since the games are very annoying and the creator of the game often doesn't join it himself.
