Results of week #6

1. Final Earth http://warlight.net/Map?ID=14538 - By RA. With a total of 17 votes. A quote from Blortis:
This map is classy. It's a good strategic map but the slightly lower income for the number of territory's forces you to rethink old habits. The SVG work seems flawless and is very pleasing visually. No complaints from me.

Math Wolf:
There is a reason why this map is used in the 2v2 ladder now. It looks very neat on all levels and perfect for strategic gameplay. The n-2 bonus system is preferred by many strategic players for a reason (although I'm personally not such a fan) and works really well here. Only minus may be that it is another earth map, but it is one of the best earth maps around, so that's not much of a minus here.

Taisho:
It's alright and definitely nice to see the 2v2 ladder finally changed its map, though really, did it have to be another earth map? Aside from a slight favouritism the map seems to have for those that start in South America, I think it's a nicely balanced strategic map. It doesn't stand out as great, but it doesn't risk slipping into mediocrity either.

2. The Lands of Ice and Fire http://warlight.net/Map?ID=10022 - By Kheimon. With a total of 15 votes. A quote from Ranek:
This map is damn awesome and a lot of fun for FFA games, as well as for diplo and rpgs. it is very well thought out. The small bonuses could seem to be too strong, but there are plenty of them all over the map. so it doesnt make the map unbalanced.

Incaman:
At first look the maps seems a bit of a mess. Some of the territories are too large for the numbers, the connection lines are a bit too strong and when you zoom out to the whole map you can barely distinguish what is what. One of the more annoying things, that seems to happen more and more, is that you have to zoom out to check the super bonuses and then zoom in to move and zoom out to check again and so on.....The connections that wrap around the map are not very visible. But I think all of this is because the map is unnecessary large.

On the other side I like the natural obstacles that really break up the map and make the game more interesting. The sea transitions solved trough ship icons are quite nice too, including the icons for the super bonuses ( although they can be a bit hard to read ). The bonuses are small which offers fast expansion and decent balance. Having played quite a few games on it I can safely say that despite the few unimportant design issues it's very fun and I strongly recommend it to all. The map creator can improve his skills in time and i wouldn't want that to diminish the score. This map is great to play on and has that "A Song of Ice and Fire" feel to it. Definitely a winner.

3. Hirilia http://warlight.net/Map?ID=6106 - By King Phillip. With a total of 6 votes. A quote from Taisho:
I like this map, I like the size the bonuses and the overall feel. I'd certainly like to play on this map, though I can't see when I'll ever have the time for it. It's clearly done with great care and detail and the undertaking of this kind of map is always a long-term commitment, so despite how rare it is for me to play on big maps, I can appreciate the amount of effort put forward.

Incaman:
Pretty much a standard warlight map. Nothing to set it apart other than moderately bad lines and really no character at all. Despite the ordinary looks it is quite fun to play with interesting choke points and contested areas. 3rd Place - It would have been second but it's not that characteristic to balance out the lack of character and the drawing faults.

Congratulations to the winners!
I was kind of hoping for your the committee's impressions after playing on my first map (Westeros and the Free Cities Small), especially criticism so I know what to do better next time. Jut a review would be nice too.

I dont want to send you the reviews from the others without permission, but with a rough overview I would estimate, that you ranked 4th maybe 5th. but not least.

That was my review:

3) Westeros and the free cities small
This one looks very nice, with its 3D mountains and the outlined bonusses. Even the size is sufficient for 1v1. Unfortunately the bonus system is unbalanced. kings landing is way overpowered and the north isnt worth to expand on. the big bonusses should be seperated into two medium bonusses. Finally, this map only needs a better bonus system, to turn out neat and enjoyable.

As this was your first attempt with map making you did a wonderful job in my opinion. Your bonus outlining colours are a bit rough. This could be changed easily, as well as the bonus system. So I hope you will consider to fix that (you can still make changes within this published map).

my review

4. Westeros and the Free Cities Small: This map looks good and offers, while small, a different strategic tactic in the two parts of the world. Thus, it has a lot of potential to be a nicely playable strategic map. Potential is the good word though as the current bonus implementation is pretty bad. It's not feasible for such a small map to have at least 2 almost useless bonuses (the North and the Reach). A 1-territory bonus for 3 armies is not done as well. From an aesthetical viewpoint, I have two more remarks. It feels weird to me to rotate the map and not use the original geographic set-up from the books. Finally, the way of drawing the borders with 2 colours is original and interesting, but a little bit too sloppily done. This approach has a lot of potential as well and could make nicely coloured maps, but sadly enough it is not done well here.

Thanks a bunch for the reviews! They're very helpful to know what experienced players expect from a map. I'm going to keep the rotated geography, but the other points are all possible to change, especially the bonuses. The next version will make less sense lore-wise, but will be more standard with bonuses.
