Warlight! I want to make a tourny based on the Football (Soccer) European Champions League.

If I can outline what I'm hoping to make and a little about how I think it will run, maybe some kind volunteers will help me to make it a reality?

The tournament will be for 32 players preferably but 8,16 or 64 would also be workable.

At the beginning players would be divided into 8 groups of 4. And would play each other player in the group 'home' and 'away'. With the top 2 players progressing into the knock-out stages which they would also play home and away until the final. The final would be a stand alone game on neutral ground.

To replicate the 'home' and 'away' games each player would nominate before the tournament a template they will use for the 'home' games.

The problems I foresee with this and where I would like your help (- even if that's just talking it through with me) are:

'Away Goals' - These are used in Champions League football to separate teams who drew over two matches, if this happens the team with the most goals scored away from home is the winner. To replicate this I'm considering using turns to win as the divider - so If player A wins 1 game and loses 1 game against player B. The player who won their game quickest would be declared the winner?

Or a small tie breaker map could be selected for instances where the two legged games were tied at 1v1?

I'm also open to other suggestions :)

The templates used should be open to veto by the community before the tournament starts - so if people bring up reasonable objections they can be dropped, and should fall within certain parameters for size and so forth (to ensure games don't go on forever). I think this would make for a more varied tournament?

Or they could be selected from approved maps and settings parameters?

To choose the map from the final maybe have a forum poll?

Thanks for reading so far. I hope you can see what I'm aiming for and if you can give me any help making it a reality it would be greatly appreciated whether that is advice or help with making it a reality.

So please let me know your thoughts and suggestions :)

Oh I'd also like a level of seeding. So for the first tournament players who have held a high ladder rank or won a lot of high standard competitions would be seeded for the group games.

Performance in the competition would make your seeding for later competitions with enough points for qualification for the next one achieved by getting out of the groups (possibly even just not coming last). And have a qualifying competition to replace the (16 or 8) players who didn't gain automatic qualification for the next tourny. These players would have no seeding points (co-efficient) and so would be seeded 4th. Over numerous tournaments the co-efficient of the players would become more dynamic as it would be based on average performance in earlier Champions League Tournaments.

Everything sounds good to me. Count me in.

The neutral game should be Strategic 1v1, and should be used for the final, tiebreakers and basically every game that isn't home/away. I think the only restrictions on the template should be the number of territories (75≤number of territories≥1000).

I disagree with the suggestion of having turns deciding a draw - I think a neutral template (Strat 1v1 seems best) would be good!

I worry about some of the templates that could be chosen, though. Obvious strategic ones (eg Qina, Turkey, Phobia) will be fine, but what if someone alters it in a key way, or creates a completely new one? Factors that could lead to silly games include: silly maps, luck, cards, distribution modes etc. If you are prepared to check the settings of each template, then it might be possible, but equally, if someone wants to include 50 negative sanctions cards, is it your place to change their template?

Overall, though, it does sound fun!

[Lynx] Dom365 - I selected a peer review method for weeding out purposefully bad templates. By making people post their template in advance, it gives the community time to look at them - if there are templates included which are against the spirit of the tourney someone should see that. I completely understand that concern - it is one of my own! but I hope a little trust in peoples common sense a set territory min/max and peer review can stop this problem. Or as I mentioned it may be better to select 'venues' a list of maps / settings people can choose their home template from?

With the away goals I'm torn as you say having a set quickish to play map for templates is a definate option. The idea about turns is because getting the away goal advantage is hugely important to the Football teams. And I'd really like to find a way to work that into the competition otherwise I can see a *lot* of the knockout games ending as best of 3's?

Happened when I was away so I missed it - Is it still running? It looks like a slightly different format than the one I was thinking of. Either way if it is great - if not maybe there is desire for another one and it could be reborn?

i like the idea but ties cant be decided on the amount of turns otherwise nobody will surrender and just stall untill eliminated thefore making each game last ages

just a quick strategic 1v1 should do the trick. these are usually fairly short

all ingame stats are unfortunatly skewable buy surrendering either early or late. ive tried this method before in games

Templates would definitely need to be reviewed before accepting

and the final should be played on 1v1 strategic...it just makes sense :)

It would make for very long games you're right.

And the away goals rule is designed to encourage attacking play, I can't think of something comparable that warlight has to encourage this ... but Football does have penalty shoot outs - automatic distribution could be a setting on the a tie break map to represent the lottery that is a penalty shoot out?

hmm i like that idea a lot actually

you could just say that tied games go straight to penelties and forget the home away ruling

the auto distbution will add some spice too

But then it just becomes more luck than skill if you tie and have to have a play of and many of the top players will not like this :/

Thanks very much Ironheart & Alex. I really appreciate any help as I've never done anything like this before. I'll set up a discussion tournament as a place to chat?

@andy I agree auto is annoying and adds more luck to the game than I prefer. Penalty shoot outs are also unfair and full of luck. (Don't ask a Chelsea fan about that tonight though)

And the player will get a chance to get the job done over two legs and avoid the 'penalty shoot-out' by winning their games.

As I said I'm very open to suggestions to make sure the tournament is interesting and fun.

Speaking of Football I had a idea of the league instead 11vs11 games (more realistically 5 a side) each weekend there would be a game, there's more info to it than that. But i don't think there's a point because not many people will be interested. If 25 people are playing we would only have 5 teams.

But please go back on topic, I didn't want to make a thread for this as it won't happen.

yes dont talk to me (a chelsea fan) about penalties !! Grrrr

A Penalty shoot out is a lot of luck thats exactly why i think the auto distribution shootout should be used. if you dont want to go to a shootout then make sure you win both games before lol
