you know, there's an interesting relation between thomas' questions 2 and 4... if tony abbott were somehow to stay until 2016, bill shorten getting elected on the basis of his *not* being tony abbott would be a disaster.

and as for why anyone would give a shit about australian politics? assuming clement attlee to be a brit, one major reason of why he, personally, should give a shit is cos the politics of anglo countries influence each other... for instance, with tony abbott, a major component of his profound fucked-upped-edness is the influence that the ideas of canadian prime minister stephen harper and his 'calgary school' way of thinking has upon abbott. but to bring it back to relevance to clement attlee, australian politics could be argued to have had a profound impact upon british society... for a good long while, australia and new zealand in effect served as an anglophile 'social laboratory', testing out ideas of how greater social egality could be functionably effected within a society.

clement attlee, if it weren't for australia, then it's quite probable that the *real* clement attlee, aka lord attlee, british prime minister from 1945 to 1951, would not have had a credible basis for doing things in britain like cementing in place the nhs or effecting the groundwork for social welfare within britain, and britain would still be looking like a charles dickens novel.
