What do you guys think about the idea of a 1v1 game that has a boot time of 0, but starts with 24 hours banked? This would mean that your timer ticks down as long as it's your turn, and stops when you commit.

This is sort of like the way a timed game works in chess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_clock

The idea is that a 1v1 would definitely finish within 2 days, making it sort of like a hybrid between real-time and multi-day.

make it two days, although the idea is great. Problem is, if my opponent lives in the US I might not get more than four turns in before he gets booted.

I like the idea, although I would probably never play this way. Any reason not to allow whatever sized time bank the game creator wants?

I like the idea, more options in the settings can only be a good thing. However, I think the game creators should be able to set their own pre-banked boot time.

The idea is very good, but only if the game-creator can change the amount of the time.

I think it would be cool to do real-time-games where every side has maybe 15 oder 30 min for the whole game.
(just like blitz chess^^)

However, I see a problem already. If a player is in a position where they would win easy in a normal game, but their opponent has a lot more boot time banked, then the player who's loosing could try and stall the game by making their opponent take as many turns as possible to eliminate them, thus potentially putting the winning player over the time limit and getting booted.

The idea sounds wonderful, although the host should be able to customize the bank time to his/her desire.

Good idea for e.g. seasonal games. As others suggested there should probably be an option to make the initial time longer when both players (not only the creator) agree.

We are thinking the bank times will be customizable using the the following time periods (1, 2, 3, and 4 days). We thought about shorter 8 hour periods, however sleep and other things come up and we opted for 1 day as the minimum so it is not a wait to boot contest. We are still debating the blitz settings, but that is another game type. This post we are only talking about a long banked clock games.

The idea is that this is a fast paced game that can be played like RT however if you need to have dinner or run errands in the middle of a game you are free to do that without getting booted. Some of have chores or soccer practice and need to step away.

Where should the open "Clocked" game be placed? RT or MD area?

BTW, How many of you use the push notifications on your phone to let you know when a game has advanced?

Its a good Idea, but yeah, two days should be on the clock, as time differential if you play someone in Beijing, and you live in Dallas.

@ Mercer
I think 1, 2, 3, and 5 days feels more natural then 1-4.
Why not make Clocked games its own category, along with RT and MD.

I for one use the ios notification. I wish it also did chat.

The idea is good, but...you have to have a sufficient life lack to play it.

Which describes many people here.

How about an option to add time each turn by some small increment (say, 5 minutes could be the default). That's how they do it in chess I think (or at least the chess timer on my phone), and it gets rid problems where each player has like 2 minutes left total and the game's not over yet.

I dislike getting booted, so I wouldn't join a game like that. I do like the idea, but I would recommend an auto-surrender after 24 hours instead of a boot.

Guys, try not to say "Like in chess" or "How it works in chess". Without being very specific about the exact kind of time used. It is incredibly many different time controls/settings in chess. For instance,

Sudden Death (S.D); A fixed time for all of the game (e.g 5 min.).

Increments; For each turn/round/move the player gains time (e.g + 30 sec). The time is carried over to next round. Normally there is a base time, through it is not needed.

Delay; Same as Increments EXCEPT when a player uses less then the increment the time is NOT carried over to next round.

After turn X (may have some fancy name that i don't know); After reaching turn 30 players gain more time. (e.g When hitting turn 30 players get 10 min.) Ther can exists multiply of this in a game.

Hourglass; When a player is thinking the time is moved to the other player. (e.g Base 5 min. First player thinks for 3 min, the moves. 2nd player now has 8 min.) Would have to be modified for WZ (WL), as players take turns simultaneously.

It is a couple (or more) that I haven't mentioned as well. (such as Armageddon). Nevertheless the above ones are the mostely used ones.

In a game of chess this time "options" are frequently combined. For instance the current FIDE (chess org.) standard is 1 h , 30 min. + 30 sec a move, + 30 min after move 40.
