+1 lolowut. It won't solve the problem of new alts, but most of the spam in the forums would go away if rules that are already in place were actually enforced. My experience of the current moderation policy is that rules are seldom enforced, and if they are, then very randomly and unequally. The one who makes the loudest demands gets his way in most cases.

make them leave

sometimes that isn't voluntary, and I think that banning people is a new degree of stupid...

Thomas, could you please clarify; to me it sounds like you are totally against banning people who misbehave. While I agree with you when it's a first offence, or minor things, don't you think that at some point there's no realistic hope for improvement left? Once a player gets there, what alternative do you suggest?

My worry is that people given the responsibility will be biased towards trolls such as Lawlz and Bane.

What do you mean biased? Either way I'm getting banned almost immediately. Only reason I haven't been yet is because of lazy administration.

I don't understand why there aren't moderators on warlight, could someone explain?

Seriously, just give a few people mod status, allow them to enforce the rules that are already in place. Give them guidelines to follow regarding recommended severity of punishment etc. Limit their powers to banning people from the forums for a short period of time initially. After a trial period, update the guidelines, give the better ones increased powers to ban people from playing etc.

Ace makes some nice suggestions. Also, a good way to prevent abuse of mod power is transparency. Always when mods give a ban or warning, make them state the fact and the reason for it in a public thread specifically dedicated to that. There, people who get warnings and bans can also appeal the decisions.

Good idea Odin, I've seen that done and it works pretty well.

The key point I'd like to make is that you do not need to reinvent the wheel. Take the ideas that work in other communities and use them here. Every forum has moderators and for good reason.

Thomas is the perfect example of a worthless poster, and his comment above is a perfect example of a worthless post. Except for this part:
even if i get one

That's hilarious.

There is moderation, I think. It's just that what you think should be moderated isn't. The Poon Squad's thread was closed down when people requested for it to be.

+1 Odin/Ace Windu.

I don't think abuse of mod power is that big of a concern. Fizzer should know by now, who the sane posters are. Just give it to any one of them and watch the forums get cleaned up in ONE day.

Colonel, there isn't active moderation. Things are dealt with only if Fizzer is made aware of them, or at least that is my understanding.

I don't see the problem then... things don't need to be moderated unless they are making people uncomfortable and when they do, they are.

What is the purpose of this thread if the current state of affairs is not making people uncomfortable/frustrated?

Fizzer/Mercer want a way to automate banning of offensive posters and are hence engaging in discussion.

Sounds good to me, though I wonder if a multi-tiered system would be better. E, PG-13 and M? Something to that effect?

I believe you have to be 13 to play the game anyways.

Imagine being a member at around level 30 to play on ladders, and you get an "M" rating and cannot play on the ladder.

No, it is rather the opposite. They want to reduce number of bans and reports by creating an arena where inappropriate content is allowed.

Inappropriate content includes swearing, which it seems the majority of today's reports consist of. Warligth will NEVER allow "Racial slurs, personal attacks, excessive profanity," or "pornographic content or links to pornographic content". https://www.warlight.net/wiki/Rules

Basically an 18+ / "M" game will allow players to swear, but not really anything more. At least that is my understanding.
