I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, or if it's already in development, but here goes:

I think it would be cool to have a ladder where the rules are based on classic risk rules. Presumably we all got into warlight because we enjoy playing Risk, so it would be cool to have tournaments with those rules (or as close as possible with Warlights settings).

Off the bat, I think a good set would be:

-4 or 6 player ffa
-Full distribution
-Reinforcement cards only
-Small Earth map
-No fog

i learned about warlight while playing battle dawn on kongregate
never knew what risk was back then, but now that i know i think its unfair to compare something as great as warlight to something such as risk

but you can create a tournament yourself and hope to get some players to join it :P

Have some respect man! Risk is one of the most classic board games ever, and is the basis for Warlight. I'm suggesting we pay tribute by creating a ladder using the original rules

I'm fine with a tournament using Risk settings, but. . . . a ladder seems like a bit much. Free-for-all ladders would be an alt-fest of epic proportions

Ryiro and Kasperov are correct. It would be a fun tourney if done right, but there are so many flaws in the map and settings that make a ladder way too luck based.

BTW, you need something more than those settings. I tried doing a risk FFA tourney and the champsionship game has already lasted 611 turns (I just quit):

You need some way to encourage attacking or the game stalls big time. Either an army cap (which is not in Risk), or progressive ref cards (based on turns). Another thing to consider is do you use Multi Attack? In risk you were allowed to take a pile and just keep on going.

This would be my suggestion for a template:

Like I said, not sure whether Multi-Attack should be used (I hate that setting).

If talking about the board game, it does. You can't have an infinite amount of pieces. Your standard game comes with 40 infantry, 12 cavalry, and 8 artillery for a total of 180 armies (the cap). Also, not quite the same but cards are progressive starting low and increasing to (from what I remember) 30.

Yeah, the trick on cards is they are progressive based on number turned in, not turns like warlight allows. So that is hard to replicate.

And I suppose you are correct on army cap, but we always just grabbed another color when we ran out, or another risk game (my in laws have two). Plus different risk games have different amounts I am sure. As kids, we had my dads old game which was wooden blocks (it did have another shape that counted as 10, but no 5s). I doubt it was the same total army amount.

It looked like this:

This is the one I grew up with (Risk was on the other side). Castle Risk was a great mod of Risk, favorite board game hands down, when I was a kid.

Looking online, it appears the version we played was made in the early 60s (with the wood pieces). Looks like our Monopoly edition was from 1961 as well.

That would be a cool feature to implement. Having the reinforcement cards change based on how many were played. Not sure if that's even possible but it would create a lot of strategic thinking around that.

Regardless of what game version it is or how many you had, there is an eventual limit. Whether that be number of pieces or space on the board, that's all I was saying.

I don't see why it can't be done. How hard it is, I don't know.

I made a risk template. Had some fun games with some good players and we tweaked it a bit. I can post it up later when I'm on my laptop.

You also need the luck to be 100% and Weighted Random. + Cylcic move order...

Good call Turtle, left those out. And Chris is spot on, the reinforcement card thing would be hard, but maybe a future update will incorporate that setting

Luck is 100% - Risk is played with dice
Full distribution of 42 Territories between 6 players means that every territory is occupied at the begining of the map.
Basic income is 3
Reinforcement card gives 9
Move order is cyclic, in Risk players take turns in order.
No Fog. In risk you can see all of the board
No Private messaging
Extra Armies for more territories
Multi Attack

I am telling you, if you dont use progressive army cards the game will stall.

@SKa
You get 1 army for every 3 territories with a minimum of 3 armies. Is what you have listed the closest we can get to that?

Chris, I can only do what warlight lets me do. If I could make it risk ... I'd probably be making it on different game ;)

@The Turtle yeah I think it's the closest warlight allows for extra that I set. It's not perfect ... it's just the best that the settings allow. Though I haven't looked at the template or played risk for a while so if I can make it better let me know.

Gnull helped a lot with the template and myhandisonfire, Noobschool, NZphoenix, Niko, The Offender, Flying Bender, GOATFINGER, Frankdeslimste, Clavicus vile, Weisblut and LOTR all played some games on the template and gave some advice.

It's probably never finished so I always welcome advice on making it better. :)
