I have long sought to make a map for warlight.
Is it permitted to ask if some veteran map designer would share a simple map from which I might learn by "edit" and review?

I am trying to get 'off the mark' so to speak :)

Unfortunately, I don't think it is possible as there isn't a way to share maps. If you use a second acount, it might be possible.

If you want to get into map making, the best way to do that is to start reading the wiki and forums and start making small maps. Even if you never publish these first maps you will learn the skills needed. Simply editing maps wont learn you the skills and will be more confusing for you if anything.

1701 and 1914 are low quality maps, 1812 is a medium quality map, and 1170 and 1618 are high quality maps.
