I am a moderator. But all I can do is move a thread to another forum. I know there are people who can promote threads. What I don't know is if anybody beyond Fizzer/Mercer can edit the content of a post. We know it has happened, but by who? I also doubt that even Fizzer has a built in tool to move posts to another thread.

On my boards I am admin on, my procedures would be:
1) Start a new thread titled something like "Lawlz/Thomas argument"
2) post a link back to the thread it was split from
3) move all derailed posts to that new thread
4) post in this thread that the argument was moved to the new location.
...Now the thread should still be on track and they can bicker over who contributes more to the forums.

Are you saying you're willing to dedicate actual time out of your actual life to an argument between lawlz and thomas?

sounds like 2 votes for banishment.

If it were an important thread like this, yes. Because I think this discussion is that valuable. If the thread is about cars (since there is a thread for that) and they bicker, who cares? It all depends on the value of the discussion.

A point of clarification, Chris.

That sounds really good if that were to happen, but in your scenario, who has the power to do all of that? Up until your post at the top of page 4 here, it sounded like you, as the thread creator would have that power. But then you said you are a moderator also. Would whomever creates the thread have the power to manage it, or just the moderators? Taking that question further, it sounds like you would manage your threads responsibly, but what would happen if these threads were created by less responsible people who would just get rid of opposing viewpoints?

Another suggestion for improvement: I like to know what I'm talking about before I post something, so I frequently need to go back a page or two while I'm writing. To do this, I have to copy onto the clipboard whatever I've written then paste it back when I'm ready to write again. Could we make it so we could change pages and not lose what we've written.

Why would the thread creator have any powers? That is a terrible system that would be ripe with abuse. Only moderators can use moderator tools, that way Fizzer has a small pool of those he trusts.

AS far as your suggestion, I often need to reference other posts...but all you have to do is right click, open another page in another tab. Problem solved.

maybe if people stopped promoting the same point over and over (I mean how many times does everyone have to keep jumping at lawlz being a transsexual) then the forum would work better.

Note legal term of the word forum:
a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.

Does that include jumping up and down at each other (I am guilty of this), although we can give some license to some threads. also what is so wrong with my memes? Sorry that they can be a little big but it isn't intentional (I don't know their size until I post them)

Fizzer or Mercer, if you read this, and get a chance, could you let us know your ideas on this please? I think most of us would trade off some "freedom of expression" for a few of the forums to be moderated quite closely.

in retrospect i guess i have to agree that trolls et al are still around polluting the forums. maybe i got too used to ignoring any text from those kind of people.

I think that you should only be able to comment on a thread a certain number of times until it is blocked...

^bad idea. All that will lead to is more stupid threads that overlap. Once someone hits the limit they will just make a new thread.

The issue is number of threads, not number of posts. If people want 600 pages of +1/-1 crap in a thread, who cares? I can ignore a thread if I don't care for it. But I can't ignore 20 threads on the front page that all suck (in my eyes).

True. Can't you make a sub-thread option?

maybe if people did not keep derailing useful or relatively important topics with other bs, the same points would not keep getting buried under other stuff, and would not be as much of a recurring issue?

I agree Chris, giving some means of control over content, in a good way, would help a lot, especially if a subsection of the more respected and mature players were given the ability to do such, this might need to go as far as banning (temporarily and permanently) from the forums depending on a user's behavior, though this should probably not be something decided unilaterally by a single mod. fizzer and mercer cannot cover everything on their own, especially the hydra that is the forum trolls, at least, not right now.

on a different note, I would argue that cleaning up the forums should take priority. You can argue that other things, like fixing the tournaments, etc. are more important, but where will this be discussed? where are the details worked out? it would be mostly here on the forums, and not by private messages, right? :P

if most attempts at a reasonable discussion to fix other issues are derailed by attention seeking morons, weasels, and overly sensitive divas, who are crowding out the actual discussion and making it difficult to fix the problems, then how will anything else get fixed? at least, in any due fashion?

Good point. The fact that most of the great players are rarely seen on these forums is disturbing to me. There is rarely great talk of strategy like there used to be.

I don't know if this has been sugested already, but the thing that i miss the most on the forum is the ability to "follow" threads, and to check "my thread", that is to say the thread that i posted on and the thread i want to follow. And everytime a thread gets one or more post on it, it would jump on top of the "my threads" page with a +1,+2, +5, etc sticker depending on the number of answer since the last visit. That would be awsome

Forums really need an overhaul, might not be the most important thing to do, but should be relatively high on the to-do-list :/

Agree with punching bag. Forums don't seem very important, but when there is a devoted section of the dashboard that everyone sees all the time, they become important.

Fizzer/Mercer, what do you think?
