I started multiplayer two days ago, and I've already noticed a disgusting amount of homophobia on this site, through the forums and public chats.

Are there many mature, open-minded clans? Or do the majority of the people on this site spew hatred? If the problem is in the core of the community, meaning it is tolerated without rebuke, I don't really want to go near the forums again.

The homophobes make up a small minority. Unfortunately not the mute minority.

Austin by creating this post you are giving them some importance again and advertize more or less their message of hatred. So please instead of creating useless discusssions such as this one again, which will certainly allow Colonel, Lawlz and their minions to throw their venom here, why not just boycott any of these discussions, people are always answering them, that's actually what they really want. Just ignore them (as I will do now)

Homophobes are a loud minority here, concentrated on the lower half of the Bell curve, clan-wise on Falcons and Wolves. Most clans are anti-homophobic I guess.

That's fine, you can act like a human being when suggesting it though. Likening myself to them.

It's a newer phenomenon, I think because the site is linked to other gaming sites more now, like Kongregate. But Fizzer / Mercer the Mods whomever don't really clamp down on it.

That's probably because for the first few years here the community was mature and had good conversations on this forums so I don't think they want to regulate them with a heavy hand.

Though those kinds of hate threads, and hate names should in my opinion be clamped down upon more. Unfortunately people who make that kind of post can't be reasoned with, so you need to find another way.

Homophobia is a word that's being thrown around so much without having any real meaning. A thicker skin is good defense against "homophobia" though.

As for immaturity, there's a lot of that, but with the exception of a few people it's not THAT bad of an issue.

It's purely due to the increasing popularity of the forums, you get people with big voices who want to be heard. This is why many websites with forums and/or comments have voting and flagging options to allow to community to hide potentially offensive or provocative remarks. Also, many websites have strict rules to help the moderators control this behaviour. It's the curse that comes with the anonymity of the internet and a balance between control and freedom needs to be struck.

Homophobia seems to be pretty straightforward, a hate/disdain/fear of homosexuality. A good defense against sort of discrimination is to act like a reasonable human being. Thick skin is nice, what's nicer are the people who realize this is wrong, speaking against it.

@Angry Panda, see your point of view. Hopefully though a new player (assuming not an alt) making a thread with this observation may make Fizzer realize it's not a good image for warlight/zone - probably take someone contacting google before he changes anything mind ... nudity anyone? Bringing up an obvious issue no more promotes or advertises their ideology than they already do. Acting like this is going to disappear is the same as simply gritting one's teeth as you get called a fag in the public chat before a game, or ignoring an LGBT "Re-Education" thread.

Should we ban or disallow this talk? Absolutely not. Should we ignore it? Absolutely not. Engage these people peacefully when possible and explain your views, report them for slurs or insults.

A group of forum-goers or general WL players should take up some sort of open-acceptance, for everyone, not just LGBT, and should stand against general harassment and hate.

Homosexuality is an open and ongoing debate thats highly controversial and there are many mature people with sound arguments that disagree with you. I'm not saying who's right and who's wrong but it just sounds incredibly arrogant because you seem to be assuming that you're immediately on the moral high ground when it comes to this issue.

Just my impression anyway.

pulsey are you serious? i don't think it's up for debate at all, and anyone that tries to debate it is a sad pathetic cave dweller. discriminating against people because of their gender, race, or sexual preference is just plain wrong. i figured this out 20 YEARS AGO. and i come from indiana (ya know the state that's in the news for being anti-LGBT).

until fizzer decides to moderate these forums properly i think any kind of bigotry needs to be shouted down immediately. of course the best solution is for the bigots to shut the fuck up and play the game, but until they do i'm gonna call them out.

Homophobia isn't neccesarily harrassment. Showing a simple, quiet, aversion to homosexuality is homophobia too. And some people have strong views on this with reasonable arguments. Its still a very open debate.
