I'm in a dispute with another player at the moment about what the difference between Roleplay and Diplomacy is. How do you, the community, define these terms in the context of WarLight?

Diplomacy - At the most basic level, you slowly kill your neighbours one-by-one, saying before you attack them in almost all diplomacies. PE if you don't say, in almost all diplomacies.

Roleplay - Specific diplomacy kind, the point isn't to win, but to talk with friends and pretend that you are world leaders. Usually close-knit and generally has higher-knowledge folk. Much more casual, in other words.

Diplomacy = FFA, normaly war has to be declared, alliances announced etc.

Roleplay = Players act as someone else, typicaly a historical player, but can also be a fictional character. Roleplay normaly follows the same rules as in Diplomacy games.

The goal in both games is to have fun, it is secondary to win :)

Hm... I kind of roleplay in quite some of my games but still play 100% competitive. Is that such a strange thing to do? Even football players roleplay. When they celebrate a goal, this is mainly for the specators I guess.

I have a couple characters in my repertory:
- Crazy Norman who is super sad that he has to kill his opponents.
- Dumb Norman who thinks a teamgame is a diplo and tries to make peace.
- Best player in the history of WarLight who needs 2-3 opponents to get a challenge.
- ...

Roleplay is not a term created in WL.

Roleplay is to act as if you are someone else. It can be a warrior (like a typical role-playing match), a famous person or even a world leader (the latter is the most common case in warlight diplomacy matches).

Diplomacy is a unnoficial WarLight game mode made up by players were some extra rules (including the requisite of roleplaying as a world leader).

Are you sure? Diplomacy is surely a term made up by warlight players. I refuse to believe otherwise.

Diplomacy - A game where you need to declare to attack, you make alliances, etc.

Roleplay - A game where you role-play.

Diplomacy is totally a term created in WL! There is no evidence to prove otherwise.

As been stated before, roleplay is much more casual. A straight diplomacy game is often full of backstabbing and secret alliances, and there is more of a wish to win.

Diplomacy - Rules are defined by the one.

Roleplay - Rules are defined by all.

looks like it wasnt created in warlight:
1796, from French diplomatie, formed from diplomate "diplomat" (on model of aristocratie from aristocrate), from Latin adjective diplomaticos, from diploma (genitive diplomatis) "official document conferring a privilege"

There is a new kind of game... I don't know what it's called but basically the game starts out as an FFA, but you can make diplomacy if you wish. Anyone got a name for it?

Diplomacy is based off of the board-game "diplomacy":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_%28game%29

Also, I define diplomacy on WarLight as the game in which the aim is to create strategical alliances in order to gang-bang strategically until eventually you either get destroyed yourself or destroy everyone else. Roleplay and diplomacy is not necessarily different. The clans which are referred to as roleplaying clans are usually referring to internal roleplay, not a setting of WarLight game.
