When I use Bezier Freehand and go to Node-editing mode, it gives me a couple thousand of nodes. How can I prevent this from happening?

Simplify the line.

However most map makers use the line tool instead, it takes longer but you get better quality (and less nodes) in the final map.

There's also a rounding setting on the freehand tool, upping that to 30 or so will get rid of them immediately, while staying more true to the original drawing than if you drew first and then pressed ctrl+f. But as Skunk said the line tool is more useful. I recommend using the freehand for coastlines, and territory borders with straight lines.

Yeah, i am doing that on my latest map skunk. MUCH better results using the line (so many fewer nodes).

Thanks for sharing. So there are two options.

1. Use the line tool.
2. Simplify the Bezier freehand by using the key command CTRL+L.

I think that I'll examine multiple maps for an idea of what to do.
