seems to me that it shows little to do with skill.... much more to do with lottery games and just how many games you play. I got to level 56 by playing 80+ FFAs at a time, doesn't mean i'm good, far from it, i get creamed in most 1 V 1s. Why the 'level' exists at all is a bit of a mystery as it really does tell us nothing. Why is it games can't be rated like they are for the ladder? If games were rated, it would push aside any advantage of playing many games and a huge plus IMO would be the end of lotteries completely, no high level players would want to risk a lottery against players of a lower level. Just my thoughts, and perhaps would be too hard to code but i think it would answer the question of who are the most skillful players much better than a level system

Why do lottery games still give experience gains?
Surely the smart thing to do is turn the gains off..... Force people to earn levels.

why are lottery games allowed? They are ridiculous and only slow down servers.

I get this. I have a pretty high level from playing lots of games with friends and not taking it seriously. A level 10 with half a brain could take me apart easily

level 38 is not a high level.
I have had plenty of experience with this myself. Me and some friends will be waiting for an hour just for a rt 3v3 ror to start because our level and a picture next to our name are too intimidating.
So we usually either get total noobs who have no idea what they are doing or we wait a really long time.
Now, what happens when I switch over to a low level alt? Game starts in 3 minutes. People are stupid.
Another gripe I have. Achievements count for WAY too many points. Some people can get to about level 40 or 50 just by riding the achievement train. It takes almost no skill to actually complete any of these and they are just a waste of encrypted data. How many times have you looked at somebodies achievements to see how good of a player they are?

they might be there to provide encouragement to newer players.
im not sure many people look at achievements over win rates :P
a lot of people don't realize that your level is a summary of sorts, of how many games you won, and to a degree, the variety. it is not the win ratio.

It generally gives an estimate of the players competency of playing the game. Doesn't really mean the higher level is more skilled or better...the lesser players could be more tactical and have better strategy thoughts than the higher level player...
Which sort of relates to a previous post in this thread... I quote
"natto Level 38 I get this. I have a pretty high level from playing lots of games with friends and not taking it seriously. A level 10 with half a brain could take me apart easily ".............

The main issue I see is that if someone wins 100 games in 200, they have X points. As well, if someone wins 100 games in 1000, they could still have X points (or even more with achievements).
Most people don't realize this and assume the former. You need to look at levels AND games played to get a true indication of skill, but most are lazy and don't.

Like fleecemaster said, it's the same reason people think age is related to wisdom. You get some credit for just sticking around. I started a few months ago and I work from home so I'm pretty much playing all day while I work. I'm probably 10 levels higher than I should be just from people being auto-booted from games.

Even looking at the percentage of games won isn't a good indicator of skill. It takes some skill to get an 80-90% win rate on the open games, but it takes much more skill to put in a halfway decent showing on one of the ladders.
