Nowadays, this idea makes absolutely no sense. The borders are fixed in these areas. Lviv is Ukrainian, Vilnius is Lithuanian, Szczecin, Gdańsk and Wrocław are Polish. End of story. Even Kaliningrad Oblast is Russian.

It never made sense and goes on to not make sense today.

Ukraine is Russia's left leg, in a similar but more important way than Canada is the US's hat.

Oh, and Juq, if you find that Poland's northern borders are contested, how about Russia? Half of it, if not more, would be contested.

Russia:Ukraine is not a good comparison with America:Canada, America is much more powerful than Canada, than Russia than Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine have not had good relations since 2000, since 2013, just awful relations.

I'm agreeing with you, but yes, there are many "contested" regions of Russia.

Wow, Colonel. You're pretty far out there. Banning a religion is just plain medieval. Antisemitism (which you seem to have) is shared by you and who? NAZIS! Gun laws in Texas (and all over the United States) are ridiculous! A 9 year old child was being taught how to use a FUCKING UZI! It kickbacks d guess what! She couldn't handle the kickback and accidentally shot her instructor in the face! NO person should be able to have assault weapons, only a hunting rifle.

Ha, firstly, I assume they mean everything south of the Stanovoy range. Well, no duh, Chinese are going to be moving there, it's the only nice region of Russia that borders China. There are no valuable natural resources there, that's all in Siberia.

China and Russia are friends, at most, China is influencing Russia.

I dont know about this hypothetical RUsso-Chinese friendship, but all I know is that the Chinese government is on purpose moving hundred of thousands of chinese migrants to the Russian far east, and that once those lands were Chinese (Haishenwai), so who knows what will happen.

here are the 10 points :

1. Nobody benefits more from Putin’s move in Crimea — and has bigger sanctioning potential on Russia over the long term — than China.

2. During the age of European colonial expansion in the 19th century, China was forced to cede the Far East and parts of Siberia to Russia.

3. During the last century, in 1960s and early 1970s, there were border tensions and even a number of armed clashes between China and the Soviet Union.

4. Small parts of Russian territory were then quietly ceded to China. While the two countries recently agreed to accept the current borders, China claims much larger chunks of what is now Russia.

5. As if to “settle” these claims by osmosis, Chinese settlers have been steadily moving into Russia’s remote, economically depressed and underpopulated regions.

6. By asserting its historic sovereignty over Crimea, Russia has set a dangerous precedent for the Chinese as they look over their northern border.

7. Unlike the poor Crimea that Russia just seized, those vast empty spaces of Russia’s Far East are full of all kinds of natural resources.

8. Energy resources are what China’s booming economy craves. And now China’s citizens live there too, much like ex-Soviet Russians residing in Crimea.

9. Russia’s Crimea strategy creates a legal precedent for other countries that have “alternative” border preferences, including China, to follow suit if the relevant opportunities arise.

10. Count on Beijing to bide its time – and, unlike Putin, not to do anything precipitous or unlawful. But when the time comes, it will not hesitate to re-assert its territorial claims against Russia.

The upshot:

After the Crimea incident, Russia will have no one to blame but Putin for providing a convenient excuse for an eventual Chinese land grab.

Yes, I read your article, and it's very ridiculous. It's clear to me that China and Russia are friends, but China is not going to support anything rash like that. It's always these analysts from politic magazines coming from NATO who want to separate China and Russia, as China is vital to American success, while Russia is not. China has no sanctions on Russia.

China at it's greatest extent. And the Sino-Soviet split is not in effect, since there are no Soviets anymore. Russia and China got rid of their last territorial disputes in 2010, I think. Also, this land hasn't been Chinese since the 1800s, while Crimea was part of the RSFR until 1954; it would be like Russia annexing Ionian islands. Most of the other points on here are just speculation.

Juq remember about Macao, Hong Kong? I dont think the British and the Portuguese wanted to renounce those lands, but they did, because China the Asian Dragon as awaken, Russia is not yet threatened because of its army and massive stock of nuclear weapons, but Russia is declining, and those lands are now slowly facing a chinification while old russian families are moving and facing a dangerous demographic decline. You know what happens next? if not by war China will gain these lands thanks to its soft power (the US are the masters in this field), and Russia will have not any way to stop this.
